Brief Alcohol and Substance Intervention for College Students
BASICS is a two-session prevention program where UTEP students can examine their drinking behaviors in a non-judgmental and confidential environment. BASICS is designed to reduce problematic drinking among UTEP students by helping them make healthier decisions. The goal of BASICS is to promote healthy choices, to motivate modifications of drinking patterns, and improve coping skills.
Step 1 Registration

Step 2 Schedule
The BASICS Facilitator* will email you the availability hours for the semester and work with your time to schedule Session 1. During Session 1, you will learn about drinking statistics, safe drinking, and health awareness.
Step 3 Responsibilities
After Session 1, we will ask you to track your drinking for at least two weeks, complete the Feedback Survey, and schedule Session 2.
Step 4 Review
During Session 2, you will come to our office and expand your knowledge about your current drinking, how your family history can impact your drinking, and any risks associated with your drinking behavior in the past 3 months. All of this is done in a private environment!
*BASICS is administered by a trained graduate student.
By the time you complete BASICS, you will know more about drinking measurements, be able to evaluate your drinking, and become familiar with some safety tools to use while drinking.
