GTF Accelerated Scholarship
Many of El Paso’s Early College High School (ECHS) students have demonstrated their abilities to forge new educational pathways by completing their Associate’s degrees prior to their high school graduations. This scholarship will reward that remarkable accomplishment by providing support to these outstanding students who attend The University of Texas at El Paso (UTEP) after their high school graduations (at which point they become responsible for their own cost of attendance) by (1) a $500 scholarship per semester, for up to 4 semesters, to assist with tuition and fees, and (2) one time $500 – $1,000 awards for access to high-impact practices such as study abroad, professional conference attendance, or internship opportunities.
The goals of this scholarship are to
- Increase awareness of the importance of completing and doing well in UTEP courses while on the accelerated track,
- Increase financial support after high school graduation to continue on a path that will lead to timely university degree completion, and
- Provide targeted and timely advising and professional development workshops designed to address educational and career preparation specifically for ECHS accelerated students.
This scholarship will promote the intended outcomes of:
- Increased success in UTEP classes while concurrently enrolled in high school,
- Reduced time to baccalaureate completion after high school graduation,
- Reduced cost of attendance to baccalaureate completion,
- Increased access to high-impact practices, and
- Stronger preparation for postgraduate success through workshops sequenced for appropriate support and information for the time at UTEP in preparation for post-graduation success.
This proposal directly reinforces GTF’s mission by supporting El Paso students, who are majority Hispanic, underrepresented in higher education, and of low socioeconomic status ($18,705 is the per capita income in El Paso County, according to 2014 U.S. Census Bureau data), through partnerships among UTEP, El Paso Community College (EPCC), and the nine ECHSs in Region XIX. Support will be provided for up to 60 students in each of three cohorts beginning at UTEP in fall semesters academic years 2016, 2017, and 2018, for up to four semesters.
