Frequently Asked Questions
- What is the Mother-Daughter/Father-Son Program?
- The Mother-Daughter/Father-Son Program is planned and carried out by a group of people from the University of Texas at El Paso and participating school districts. Their purpose is to help sixth grade girls and boys and their mothers and fathers begin to think about preparing for the future.
- Why do we need to think about our future now?
- Some of the things you will decide and will do in the next few years can affect your whole life. We want to make sure that you learn about all the options you have before you make decisions, particularly about your education.
- How can the Mother-Daughter/Father-Son Program help me?
- The program plans activities for your participation. The activities will introduce you to the University, help you learn about careers, and provide you with the opportunity to meet successful Hispanic men and women of our community. You will discover interesting people and places. On every occasion, you will be encouraged to believe in yourself and to strive to achieve success as a student.
- Why does my mother/father participate with me in the program?
- The person who can best support you and help you grow as a student and as a person is your mother/father. You will work as a team to start planning your future. The activities we have planned will help your parent learn how to guide and support you in your efforts.
- What will we do?
- We will meet several times throughout the school year for campus, district and university activities. Bus transportation will be provided when you go to activities off campus. Before each activity, you and your mother/father will receive complete information from the campus coordinator.
- Does anything happen at my school?
- Each school has a campus Coordinator that helps you with the program and the various events throughout the year. During the months of November and December you will engage in campus projects that will be coordinated by your campus coordinator.
- If I have questions who can I ask?
- At the end of this booklet is a list of phone numbers for the people that coordinate the program. Your district and Campus Coordinators will have all the program information necessary to answer your questions about the program.
- How was I chosen to be in the program?
- Teachers and other school officials in each of the participating schools were asked to recommend sixth-grade girls/boys who would appreciate and be able to benefit from the program. You were recommended to participate in this program.
