Basic Transfer Information
For immigration purposes, transfer students are F-1 students with an Active SEVIS record who want to attend another school. This could include traditional transfer students who are in the middle of a program at one school and want to transfer to another, or students who recently completed a program at one school and want to begin a new program at another school.
Students who want to transfer their SEVIS record must begin classes at the new school within 5 months of when they were last enrolled at their current school. Upon a successful SEVIS record transfer, the student is eligible to remain in the U.S. between programs. After a successful SEVIS record transfer, F-1 students are not required to re-pay the I-901 SEVIS fee. Students who have a valid F-1 visa and students who do not plan to travel internationally do not need to obtain a new F-1 visa when the SEVIS record is transferred.
Most transfers are completed during school breaks between terms. If you wish to transfer during a term, you must contact an OIP advisor and an international advisor from the other school to determine eligibility.
Students who wish to transfer should work closely with the international advisors at each school to determine their SEVIS Transfer Release Date. You must consider the following when determining what date to transfer:
- The student is only eligible for employment (on-campus, CPT, OPT) at the school that currently holds their SEVIS record. If the student is participating in any employment, the employment must stop the day before the SEVIS Transfer Release Date.
- The student is only eligible to enter the U.S. with an I-20 from the school that currently holds their SEVIS record. If the student is traveling internationally, he/she must obtain the I-20 from the new school if re-entering the U.S. after the SEVIS Transfer Release Date.
Students who are attending another U.S. school and who want to transfer their Active SEVIS record to UTEP to begin classes should follow the typical International Student Immigration Application Process. These students should receive an email within 48 hours of being fully admitted with instructions on applying for the I-20.
Applications are submitted through Sunapsis in the "Admissions Checklist" section. Students must also submit the "SEVIS Transfer In Request" from the "Admission" tab. Failure to complete this form will result in a new SEVIS record being created, which requires a new entry into the U.S. and re-paying the I-901 SEVIS fee.
Students transferring in to UTEP are required to report their arrival to campus. This should be done up to 30 days before classes begin, and no later than the first day of classes. Students report their arrival using the "Immigration Intake" form on the "Admissions Checklist" in Sunapsis.
UTEP will not accept a Terminated SEVIS record. If your SEVIS record is not Active, you must either exit the U.S. and re-enter with a new I-20 and SEVIS record, or apply for Reinstatement. Be sure to consult with an OIP Advisor before beginning either process.
You may choose to transfer out of UTEP to attend another SEVP-certified school. These students should submit the "SEVIS Transfer Out Request" in the "F-1 Student Services" tab in Sunapsis. You must have been fully admitted to the new school and upload a copy of your admission letter in order for OIP to process the SEVIS record transfer.
