Tell us about yourself. Who are you and what do you hope to be? |
My name is Michael A. Gutierrez, and I'm here to recruit you! I am running to be your next student body President. I am majoring in Political Science with a minor in Intelligence and National Security. Public service is the most significant component of who I am, and my life motto is simple: leave the world a better place than the way you found it. We, as the UTEP student body, are more than capable of changing the lives of present and future miners. Our students deserve leaders who will strengthen their voices and listen to their needs. Many people believe that one vote does not matter, but your vote does, and your voice matters. I can't wait to meet you all on the campaign trail, go miners!
|
Are you a returning member of SGA? |
Yes |
What are the accomplishment(s) you're most proud of from your previous completed term(s)? |
Over my tenure in Student Government, I held the roles of House of Representative, Traffic Court Justice, Senator-At-Large, Attorney General, and Executive Assistant. During each of my terms in office, I have accomplished and developed numerous partnerships that have benefited the student body. I was able to develop a list of gender-neutral restrooms, assist students with parking citations, facilitate various social/voter engagement workshops, serve on a committee to find the university a new Provost, host the El Paso delegation during the pandemic, and most recently work with UTEP PD to ensure a safer campus. Among my many accomplishments, the one I am most proud of is the time I get to spend listening to students. I fundamentally believe that communicating with the individuals we serve is more vital than any action, workshop, or policy change.
|
What will be your priorities if elected or re-elected into office? |
If elected President, our government's focus would encompass five essential areas: development, innovation, spirit, connection, and opportunity. There is over 24,000+ students on campus that can benefit from all the outstanding programs offered by our institution. Student Government needs to promote and develop programming that will enrich our student body. Our Student Government should influence meaningful change on campus. It is time for us to innovate and focus on policies so that we can truly make a difference in the lives of our students. Our athletics programs deserve significant student engagement. Student Government needs to empower the student body to become not only Miner strong, but Miner proud. As we readjust to our return to campus, Student Government must bring our student body together and connect with our constituents. Lastly, populations of students on our campus may not feel represented. It’s time we give equal opportunity to all students.

What difference in the UTEP student body do you hope to make if elected or re-elected? How is running for this specific position going to help you achieve that? |
Serving in numerous positions within the Student Government Association has provided me with a variety of skills that have prepared me to run as your student body President. During my term, I intend to make two changes: (1) leave our institution in better than when we were elected, and (2) instill hope in the people of our organization and the students we serve. We can accomplish this mission together, and your vote and voice are important. Let’s get this started, come onboard let’s discover the stars together!

Growing up Latina in El Paso, TX, like many others, came with many hardships my family and I survived through. My mother recently obtained her U.S citizenship 5 years ago, which for me meant growing up in fear of losing the most important person in my life. This experience opened my eyes to the disparities our community faces and motivated me to succeed. The obstacles my family and I experienced are the reason I wish to graduate with an international business degree and further my education by attending law school. This way I can help change policies and assist people who are facing similar struggles as I once did. Using my experience in SGA, my past internship in SELC, and my position as a student assistant in CARE I hope to one day be a safe haven that individuals and families come to when they are facing hardships.

What are the accomplishment(s) you're most proud of from your previous completed term(s)? |
Being re-elected as Senator-at-large has brought me many opportunities in which I have been able to impact the student body. One of my contributions to UTEP was spearheading the EXCEL program which allows incoming freshmen the opportunity to develop their leadership skills and be exposed to the workings of the Student Government Association while participating in community service projects. Additionally, I kicked off a program called Miner’s Chef this year that strives to eliminate home and food insecurity that housing residents may develop. By stimulating students’ cooking skills in an interactive environment, they were able to gain the confidence to prepare dishes. I am currently leading #SAAM (Sexual Assault Awareness Month), which is an SGA initiative to help bring a series of events throughout the month of April revolving around raising awareness about sexual assault while providing resources to students and faculty in the UTEP community.
|
What will be your priorities if elected or re-elected into office? |
If elected into the President position I promise to stay committed to empowering students and increasing their engagement on campus while promoting a safer and more connected atmosphere. I would begin with helping our students understand what sexual violence is, know their rights in case of assault, and familiarize themselves with educational resources we have on the topic, like CARE or, CAPS, to promote a university free from fear. I also plan to use my personable and innovative qualities to foster a collective atmosphere at UTEP by uniting UTEP’s clubs and organizations with the student body. I would make sure to be a strong support system for my constituents. I would do this by having constant open communication and discussing our concerns and our accomplishments within Student Government.

What difference in the UTEP student body do you hope to make if elected or re-elected? How is running for this specific position going to help you achieve that? |
As President I hope of inspiring girls out there not to be afraid to step into leadership, to step into opportunities, and to serve as a reminder that we can do anything despite our adversities. Secondly, I plan to make UTEP a safer campus for all students, faculty, and staff. If elected I wish to end my term knowing my team and I increased school spirit and have students feel proud to be Miners. In the long run, this position will foster my ability to help people on a larger scale while leave a lasting impact on the university.

As a first-generation college student, my dedication lies within achieving the best opportunities not only for me but for my family. To be the one to continue with higher education and make their sacrifice worth it. Along with this, I have struggled with the college process, like not knowing how to fill out FASFA forms or how to get a degree plan. Most of my fellow first-generation students shared the personal obstacles I had to overcome—an unspoken one due to the pressure to be successful. My experience growing up and to this day has created a fundamental foundation for advocacy. My unwavering passion for helping others has remained constant throughout my life, which led to my interest in government administration and law, with aspirations of becoming an attorney to be the voice for underrepresented individuals. The significance behind who I am is understanding where I come from, where I want to be, and why I dream. I dream to be an advocate for students like me to assist them in any way possible and lead them to a path of success.

What are the accomplishment(s) you're most proud of from your previous completed term(s)? |
As a freshman, my introduction to the Student Government Association all began when I became a Legislative Assistant. This initial experience cultivated a passion for serving my community and an expanded interest to be a leader within this organization. In my first year as Senator, I have assisted in various special projects to better the UTEP community. Events like a cooking class provide students with recipes to create budget-friendly meals. As well as providing a learning seminar to combat physical and mental challenges during distance learning. Currently, my efforts lie in completing a project for sexual assault awareness by providing students with resources and information to combat the stigmatization of the topic. Through this, we have received support and collaboration from the UTEP CARE department and the CASFV. Ultimately, the most rewarding accomplishment through my experience in SGA is the ability to make a difference for my constituents.

What will be your priorities if elected or re-elected into office? |
As one of the leading Hispanic Universities in the nation, my priorities will emphasize empowering underrepresented and marginalized students on campus to achieve student success. As a Hispanic woman, I have experienced constant criticism from both internal and external influences, which is why I pushed to advocate for students like me. By utilizing my social competencies and professional skills, I aim to architect a university that is for the student body—creating a community where inclusivity is fostered through the enhancement of campus organizations and activities. Additionally, tackling the most prominent issues in all universities by providing resources to survivors of sexual assault to promote a campus that prioritizes safety. Overall, our goal is to encourage students, expand campus participation in activities and athletics, and raise sexual assault awareness while leveraging a greater connection.

What difference in the UTEP student body do you hope to make if elected or re-elected? How is running for this specific position going to help you achieve that? |
Student Government Association is the official voice of the students, the voice that represents them in all major University decisions. With this being said, I intend on bringing the gap between the student body and UTEP. As Vice president of External Affairs, focusing on-campus engagement and safety allows for the success of our university. Through effective communication and accessibility, I will be able to enhance the college experience. UTEP is a fantastic campus with many different possibilities and resources; the objective is to make them more accessible for students. This includes supporting underserved student groups, increasing student attendance at sporting games and campus events, and directing school services like CAPS and CARE to those who need it most. Attending a campus that is continually expanding, secure, and connected. My ultimate desire is to be the voice for the students to make them proud to be miners!

My name is Iberty and I am a Political Science major with a minor in Communication. I am noted as an extroverted individual and talking to others is something that I quite enjoy. Throughout my life, I have found that I am quite fond of working to advocate for others and help them in any way that I can. In the future, I would like to continue this advocacy at the local, state, and or federal level regardless of what career path leads me there. I have a multitude of interests such as arts and crafts, reading, and taking care of my plants. My interests tend to vary depending on what captures my attention at any given time. I enjoy history and learning odd facts about random things. I am open to learning about any given subject, except math don’t bother me with math.

What are the accomplishment(s) you're most proud of from your previous completed term(s)? |
During my time as a Senator at-Large, I worked on several projects and initiatives. As former Co-Chair of Outreach, I was deeply involved in tabling initiatives and the planning and execution of the annual Homecoming Pageant. Additionally, I worked on fostering a relationship with the Office of International Programs (OIP). I have since then become the Chair of the Outreach committee and worked with the current administration to refocus our efforts from event planning to directly engaging with students. I accomplished this by reinstating a dormant initiative called SGA Listens where we directly engage with students to hear their concerns. Furthermore, I have been involved in several voter registration drives to increase civic engagement on campus. Lastly, I have previously worked with the Center for Accommodations and Support Services (CASS) to expand awareness. Since then, I have been a strong advocate for students with disabilities and utilization of accommodations.
|
What will be your priorities if elected or re-elected into office? |
My top priority if elected is serving as a source of advocacy for students within and outside of UTEP. I would like to continue the expansion of SGA Listens to allow students to express their concerns regarding campus life, academic success, safety, resources, and accessibility for all students.
|
What difference in the UTEP student body do you hope to make if elected or re-elected? How is running for this specific position going to help you achieve that? |
Through my role as Vice President of External Affairs, I want to ensure the advocacy of students in and outside of the University. A thing that I am quite limited to accomplish to the same degree as a Senator. The following is a short list of what I hope to accomplish if elected:

Hello students! My name is Carlos Chavez and I’m proud to be running to represent y’all in the next Student Government administration. I’m an English major with a minor in Secondary Education; my goal after graduation is to teach in a high school here in El Paso. I have committed my collegiate life to empowering students through their leadership and pursuit of higher education, and I believe that with your help I can continue this work as your Vice President of Internal Affairs! Through the courses I’ve studied in and while developing my pedagogy, I hope to be the strength behind the many voices here on campus so that I can continue to uplift those who need it most. Voting in this upcoming election may seem like it’s not important, but your voice REALLY matters! Miners across campus deserve leaders who listen, and I’m listening! Vote Carlos! Vote DISCO!

What are the accomplishment(s) you're most proud of from your previous completed term(s)? |
Between my two terms in SGA, I am proud of the work that I’ve done in collaboration with my friends and colleagues. I have dedicated most of my time as the Chair and Program Coordinator for EXCEL & the EXCEL Program, a leadership & professional development program that I revolutionized in my terms. Giving back to the student body is also a great priority, and I’ve been able to do so by serving on other committees where I have helped combat food insecurity, contributed to opportunities for on-campus student employment, helped students with grade grievances, and advised members of the university administration on ADA issues across campus! My greatest joy has been talking to students, and in doing so I’ve been able to participate in voter registration drives, co-host the Texas House delegation with campus administration, and advocate for students in-and-out of the classroom!
|
What will be your priorities if elected or re-elected into office? |
If I’m elected Vice-President of Internal Affairs, our government’s focus will be to effect real policy change on campus. The VPI has great influence on the Senate and the work that we do as a government, and I will use that influence to navigate Senators toward work which ACTUALLY impacts the student body. SGA has moved too much towards event planning, and I know that DISCO can reform our government and create legislation and programming that will enrich your college experience. Maintaining an orderly Senate to ensure that our government is as efficient as possible will also be a top priority, as an efficient government means an efficient student body. Using my leadership experience, I will empower our Senate and Judicial branch to do outreach to students and see what’s really affecting them. Connecting with others and creating bonds will be the greatest representation we will do for you!
|
What difference in the UTEP student body do you hope to make if elected or re-elected? How is running for this specific position going to help you achieve that? |
In my role as the Vice-President of Internal Affairs, I will continue to do all the advocacy I have already done, and more! Alongside my running mates in the Senate race, I will work closely with each Senator to hear their comments, questions, and concerns from students and guide them with a steady hand towards the solution. I would also like to look back on previous administrations and see what goals they had; by continuing the work they left behind will maintain the continuity of our governments and set up the following year for even more success! Leadership on campus can only happen if the student body puts their trust in one-another and believes in a common goal. DISCO, and the platforms that our party believe in, is that goal. I trust that our constituents will make the right choice and vote for DISCO up and down the ballot!

I can pinpoint the origin of my respect for public service to my time in my high school’s Libertas Law program. My educators fostered an environment for me to dream and provided me with a platform to advocate for particular policies. Since then, I have focused my studies and extracurriculars to strengthen my knowledge relating to civil liberties. I believe in the principle of leading and networking to inspire individuals to strive to their fullest potential. Being an active member of Student Government, Texas Dems, and my sorority has given me the opportunity to connect with so many of my peers. At the same time, my internship at an established law firm has maintained my drive to help service my community. I plan to attend law school and break barriers for women in the political workforce while campaigning for inclusivity and freedoms for citizens.

Are you a returning member of SGA? |

What are the accomplishment(s) you're most proud of from your previous completed term(s)? |
My involvement in SGA began with my membership in the Excel program. I saw individuals who held a leadership role, but more importantly, held the potential to make an impact on our campus. I decided to run as a senator-at-large in the next general election with the determination to connect with my campus and beyond. I’ve successfully done this through collaborating with my peers and composing special projects to engage with our constituents. The partnering of an upbringing athletic team to co-hosting an initiative to battle food insecurities are a few moments that highlighted my desire to connect with UTEP. Additionally, being awarded as senator of the month for September has emphasized the continuous work I’ve put into this association. Above all, I am most proud of the explored opportunities that were presented through SGA. It is the learning experiences that cultivate my motives to spread erudition. |
What will be your priorities if elected or re-elected into office? |
The university deserves elected representatives who will work honestly to improve incongruities in the student body. If elected into office I plan to prioritize acts of support. We need to empower our students so they may flourish. We need to be constantly engaging with our campus through its resources and events. These actions will standardize a harmonious network that will work jointly to undertake pressing matters. My team has recognized sexual assault of the one of many disregarded concerns. There is no better time to have these conversations and foster an environment where the campus will endorse the resources and resolutions that support victims.
|
What difference in the UTEP student body do you hope to make if elected or re-elected? How is running for this specific position going to help you achieve that? |
UTEP has worked hard to build an establishment that only has room for improvement. Having said that, past representatives have failed to bring awareness of these opportunities, or the aid student government has to offer them. I have sought out to earn a position that will allow me to address pertinent issues of our community on a greater scale. Being in different organizations throughout campus has given me different perspectives. I am a diversified candidate who has come from a background that many students can identify themselves with. I want to be the blueprint for individuals who need help persevering through their hardships; if I can do it than so can you!

Academically I am interested in the STEM fields. Currently, I am aiming for a BS on Mechanical Engineering, but I am also planning to obtain a master’s degree on Aerospace Engineering. On professional matters, I am working to serve in the United States Armed Forces as a Fighter Pilot. After serving, I want to be an Astronaut, hopefully on the first missions to Mars. Overall, however, I would just say that I am a young adult striving to become the best man I can be so that I can serve and protect my loved ones and help others by making a wholesome impact in their lives whatever it may be. I am still green in terms of how developed I am physically, intellectually, spiritually and character wise, but I am constantly working to improve.

Are you a returning member of SGA? |
No |
What about SGA appealed to you and what do you hope to accomplish during your term in office? |
It was several aspects of SGA that I was attracted to. One was the exposure that I would have, to both my comrades and my constituents. Having the opportunity to communicate ideas and conversate with them is exciting to me. Another is the political reflection it has to the real world. I would enter a political realm in my professional life, and having a small taste of that is a beneficial aspect that attracted me to SGA.
|
What will be your priorities if elected or re-elected into office? |
My main priority as a Collegiate Senator is to make sure that I understand the people I serve, and I will do this, by the power of relationship, engaging with my fellow peers and actually developing close connections with them, to better know them.
|
What difference in the UTEP student body do you hope to make if elected or re-elected? How is running for this specific position going to help you achieve that? |
I hope that the biggest difference I can make in the UTEP student body, is to help and embolden my peers to find purpose in their lives. The way to find purpose in one's life, is to take on responsibility, starting with ourselves. I hope that the biggest impact I can make is to give back that sense of responsibility and honor to the student body. That no matter what their passion is, they will take ownership of themselves, and eventually of greater tasks that will move this world forward. That this will be the mindset we could share. This position will provide me with a network of people that will help convey this idea. That we should seek responsibility and truth.

I'm currently a senior studying Engineering Innovation and Leadership with a concentration in Finance. I'm part of a couple of student organizations on campus where I'm able to do community service, professional development, and networking. I believe those three things are really characteristics of mine and I have a passion for pursuing them also in the future. Professionally wise I will be joining Microsoft this summer as a hardware project manager, and I hope to continue a position like that in the future. As a project manager, I will be able to put into practice my engineering skills, and business acumen, in addition to working with people which is one of my biggest passions.

Are you a returning member of SGA? |

What are the accomplishment(s) you're most proud of from your previous completed term(s)? |
The project I'm most proud of is the Hire-Me Bootcamp that took place in the Fall of 2021. This project was a partnership with other engineering student leaders on campus with the goal of helping engineering students with helpful tips that have worked for us and could help them prepare for professional conferences, interviews, presentations, etc. We had an attendance rate of about 50 students and good feedback from the attendees about the event. Another accomplishment I'm proud of is the partnership created with SGA and the Engineering Student Leadership Council (ESLC) which is the engineering student organization that oversees the rest of the student orgs. This partnership has helped both me as a collegiate senator and engineering students since I get to be part of the events and I'm able to help every individual and student org from engineering in anything they might need.
|
What will be your priorities if elected or re-elected into office? |
My priorities, if I get elected, will be to create more partnerships with companies so they are more involved with UTEP students and recruit them. To create more professional development events for the students to be prepared for internships, jobs, conferences, or any other opportunity they might get. Lastly, I want to continue helping engineering student organizations and individuals to pursue their academic, professional, and personal goals during their college journey.
|
What difference in the UTEP student body do you hope to make if elected or re-elected? How is running for this specific position going to help you achieve that? |
I hope to create a big community amongst the College of Engineering where we are there to support each other. Not only with your own department but with other majors and hopefully be able to collaborate in senior design projects, internships, events, student organizations, etc. My role as a collegiate senator to make this possible will be to create those networking events and to keep partnerships with the student organizations and the College of Engineering.

When I first heard of SGA I was instantly captivated by its dedication and commitment to helping students become more successful. One way is by creating more events both educational and entertaining. I am a firm believer in making the change that you want to see.

What will be your priorities if elected or re-elected into office? |
My number one priority would be to helping the students in the College of Health Science eliminating any challenges or obstacles that would deter them from their path to success. My second priority would be to increase campus and student engagement by promoting and stimulating Greek life on campus.

Hello! My name is Andrea Nuñez and I am currently a Junior majoring in Education and certifying in EC- 6 generalist with a concentration in bilingual education. This all just means that I want to be an elementary teacher for bilingual students. I hope to one day be a fourth-grade teacher who not only teaches the basic subjects that students need to learn, but to also teach them manners and how to be a good human being out in the world. I am someone who is passionate about providing students with the best quality of education. I am a firm believer that one way in which we can provide the best quality of education for our students is by providing the best resources for educators. Because of this, I hope to one day not only be a teacher but also someone who fights for better resources for all educators.

What about SGA appealed to you and what do you hope to accomplish during your term in office? |
The Student Government Association is something that as a first year student is still fairly new to me. It has been through friends and through personal research that I have gotten the opportunity to see the change that can be made for the student body through SGA. I truly believe that even the smallest of changes and bettering of resources can help make a change whether that be a small one or a big one. I feel as though through SGA these changes are then something that can be accomplished.
|
What will be your priorities if elected or re-elected into office? |
If elected into office, one of my priorities is to make all College of Education students more aware of the processes and programs we must go through in order obtain specific certifications and our bachelors overall. In my time at UTEP I have come across several students who did not know what the EPP was or what to do before, during, and after. At first, I thought, maybe it was for individual or personal reasons why they were not able to get this information, but then I started hearing more stories from students who were already past their basics which made me realize this went far beyond a distracted student who was not able to get this information. I want to work with the College of Education to provide better resources for students right from the beginning of their freshmen year, and implementation of better support programs offered education students.
|
What difference in the UTEP student body do you hope to make if elected or re-elected? How is running for this specific position going to help you achieve that? |
One of the differences I hope to make amongst the UTEP student body if elected, is to encourage more individuals to become educators. I feel as though right now we are not only experiencing a crisis with individuals quitting their jobs as educators, but also a crisis with individuals not wanting to become educators due to certain lack of resources and support during and after becoming a teacher. I hope that if I’m able to implement said support and resource programs that I will be able to not only make those in the College of Education feel hopefully about their journey to becoming a teacher, but also encourage others to join the College of Education.

What are the accomplishment(s) you're most proud of from your previous completed term(s)? |
In my past terms as a Senator, I’ve had the pleasure to work alongside many other Senators to work on projects together entailing student connectivity, civic engagement, and community service. In terms of my biggest accomplishments, I take a lot of pride in getting elected as the Chairman of the Appropriations Committee for my past term. Getting to serve in this Committee for my first term showed me not only how SGA gave back to students and organizations through monetary assistance, but also gave me experience to step up as Chair. Starting in Fall of 2021, I’ve established great relationships with students traveling for research, organizations going to conferences, or those hosting events here that need funding. Leading this Committee has been the honor of my life, but the real accomplishment is knowing how many students’ lives have been made easier with our help to represent UTEP in amazing ways.
|
What will be your priorities if elected or re-elected into office? |
If re-elected into office, I want to continue in helping reach students through the Appropriations Committee since many students are unaware of this resource available. Besides that, I plan to continue working on projects that will promote student engagement and civic engagement. As a large population of the student body commutes to school, I hope to prioritize ways to get them involved in events or activities that keep them active on campus, but also aware of who their student leaders are. Additionally, since the midterm season is coming up, I want to also prioritize initiatives, from voter registration to town halls, to keep students politically engaged and educated on what is happening in their local, state, or federal government.
|
What difference in the UTEP student body do you hope to make if elected or re-elected? How is running for this specific position going to help you achieve that? |
Many people are unaware of what exactly the student government does or even that it exists. I want to make sure that I can change that in any capacity within my position of Senator-at-large. Having been serving in this seat for the past two years, I recognize that it is a great opportunity to reach students through engaging campus events, special projects, or Committee work. That being said, this position will continue to help me be in consistent contact with students to tell them about the work student government does to help develop leaders, provide funding, improve campus sustainability, and most importantly, be their voice through university bureaucracy.

What about SGA appealed to you and what do you hope to accomplish during your term in office? |
My aspirations to be a lawyer encouraged me to join, as I would obtain experience in law and network , but it not just the experience that appealed to me, it was getting involved in school for so long I felt that I was “not good enough “ or “not cool enough “ to join an organization that you had to be somewhat popular or look a certain way but then came to the realization that I wanted to make a difference and that maybe other people felt the same way I did and wanted people to feel identified in someone who is “normal”.

My name is Zachary Rosalez, a Senior Mathematics major soon to be doing a Minor in Computer Science. I am just the average student with fascination and determination in the mathematics field and all things historical and informational. I like to work with great determination and effort with punctuality because of the demands of our assignments and tasks in this modern age to have sophisticated time and professionally. My passion after undergraduate learning is pursuing a Doctorates degree in data analysis or data science and utilizing computations and statistical information benefiting our state and national security interests such as the CIA or the FBI. It piques my interest because I have the odd ability to read spatial data, analyze charts, and draw patterns, which makes mathematics a strong suit and a good career choice for me.

What about SGA appealed to you and what do you hope to accomplish during your term in office? |
My interest concerning SGA is performing my service towards the student body and the entire school and university despite doing this similarly a long time ago. Joining SGA with an official position has been a long four years of waiting, investigating, and observing everything I had seen already during my time at UTEP. Should I be elected Senator At-Large, my objectives are as follows. Bridge the gap between UT officials and our university, assist students from countries restricted by the State Department to obtain an education, and represent the interests and opportunities of students who are disabled (intellectual, physical, developmental, etc.) who may feel excluded.
|
What will be your priorities if elected or re-elected into office? |
The priorities I want to establish if duly elected as the Senator At-Large is at first to establish a connection with all my members in my party to have a coexisting relationship with the other opposing parties involved in the SGA. The voices of the student body, especially those that I want to represent in office, should be the main focus of our attention, whether it's SGA, UTEP events, or any representation to UT and everyone else. I stand apart from others in that I am open to hearing opposing voices and even working with them regardless of policies that are contrary to my own. However, there will be times I will have to disagree with my party and vote through my consciousness, and vote for what should be the right course of action done.
|
What difference in the UTEP student body do you hope to make if elected or re-elected? How is running for this specific position going to help you achieve that? |
To make a difference for the student body, I want them to have confidence and to have an equal opportunity to compete against those with higher levels of education. The chances I want to have for them is to have a more critical, advanced, rigorous refined way of education learning as in the Ivy Leagues or a high-class university. My role as Senator At-Large is to rally support among members of the body, the party, SGA, and administration to seize this opportunity and strengthen UTEP's power and capabilities.

What are the accomplishment(s) you're most proud of from your previous completed term(s)? |
After running in the special election, I put all my focus on issues of the Fine Arts and LGBTQIA+ community. From spreading awareness about SGA and the resources that these Fine Arts students have, to helping find a way to fix issues within the department including reporting about the recurring issue of dirty or no water fountains working. One of my greatest achievements is the writing and passing of my resolution. I pushed out a resolution to affirm the gender identity of all who step foot on the UTEP campus. It focuses on the addition to more genders than just the two binary ones (male/female) and pronouns that people may use. Although my time in SGA was only a few months in comparison to my fellow senators, I knew that I had the ability to make changes for some of the most underrepresented communities at UTEP.
|
What will be your priorities if elected or re-elected into office? |
My main priorities while in office are: ensuring new senators feel at home within the office; continuing my efforts for trans rights on campus; focusing on the representation of the Fine Arts within the Liberal Arts college; continuing to focus on the issues my fellow peers bring to me; advocating to re-establish a form of the House of Representatives in Student Government.

Hola and Hello, I’m Alejandro Balderrama Sánchez, I’m 19 years old, former Resident Assistant in UTEP and I’m a sophomore majoring in Criminal Justice. I decided to run to represent those who like me, are first generation students, work and study, are from other countries, and what more opportunities in UTEP. As students, I consider we all work hard to be in UTEP, and we all do our best from that opportunity. We all need a voice in SGA that represent those who run after class to get on time to work, those who still up ‘til 3am doing their homework, those who are not only learning the curriculum but a new language and are adapting to a new life, to those who live in UTEP housing, and overall, all our community that wants real improvements in our college. Y’all deserve a strong voice talking for you, taking the leadership.

Once in office, I’m hoping to improve the opportunities for students in UTEP. Working in ways to connect students with resources like internships and research opportunities more easily. I want more students involve in UTEP, with access to opportunities that will boost their careers. I want those students who cannot serve in SGA because of lack of time feel represented and protected. I want our living-on-campus community to enjoy improvements in their facilities, so they can live comfortably knowing that we are taking care of them too. And I don’t want to hear anyone going late to class because of problems with the parking system. What about SGA appealed to you and what do you hope to accomplish during your term in office? |
SGA's potential to effect change on the university is what appealed to me in my first semester at UTEP. For this reason, I joined the SGA Excel Program where I had the privilege of learning from current senators and executive officers how to effectively represent the student body through memberships in committees and special projects. I hope to use that knowledge to accomplish the following goals: increasing SGA's involvement and support of the fundraisers and recruitment activities of student orgs on campus and fostering campus identity and spirit by working to promote student attendance at UTEP sporting events. I also want to be an advocate for higher student-worker wages on campus and hope to effect real change and be a voice for student employees. I have not worked at UTEP, but I have held a minimum wage job and understand the benefits that come from paying a living wage.
|
What will be your priorities if elected or re-elected into office? |
One priority I have is to work with the Student Engagement and Leadership Center to take count of the active and inactive student organizations that are listed on Minetracker. It is often said that Minetracker has over 200 organizations to choose from however many have not shown activity for years. Ensuring that each organization listed is active would make it significantly easier for students to find and join a strong organization. I would then prioritize reaching out to the sponsor of each inactive organization to encourage its reactivation. I also hope to attend at least one meeting from each willing student organization throughout my term to better understand their needs and meet their members. An additional priority would be to rally support for and encourage fundraising if needed within these organizations. As mentioned before, I will also prioritize advocating for increasing student-worker wages to the best of my ability.
|
What difference in the UTEP student body do you hope to make if elected or re-elected? How is running for this specific position going to help you achieve that? |
My goal is to make a difference for UTEP students where it truly counts. That is why if elected I have chosen to prioritize increasing student involvement through Miner sporting events, increasing student government support of student organization's fundraising and recruiting goals, and finally, advocating for increased student-worker wages. The reason is simple- because each of these, will better thousands of student's daily lives. UTEP's student government cannot afford to think small in this department because bettering the student experience is what it is paid to do. Running for Senator at-Large will allow me to work towards that goal tirelessly and allow me to meet students personally and listen to their concerns. It would be an honor to serve the student body in this capacity and if elected I vow to take my job seriously and collaborate efficiently with my colleagues to Discover the true potential of SGA.

Like you, I am a student who seeks to motivate and support my fellow students in their growth as future professionals. I am aware of the situations that happen around the campus, whether with faculty, staff or students, this is because in my journey as a student I would like to have this same contact with a person who was there to listen to our ideas, concerns or any situation that we are going through and help us solve it. I don't want to be famous, let alone be popular, I want to be a colleague who when they need support, they can count on, I want to help my fellow engineers, international and university students to achieve their goals and find new ways to gain experiences and knowledge on their college journey.
|
Are you a returning member of SGA? |
Yes |
What are the accomplishment(s) you're most proud of from your previous completed term(s)? |
The Student Government Association is the organization that is responsible for representing all students on our campus, it is the bridge that exists between the faculty, staff and students. I consider that the greatest accomplishments that I have achieved is the attention that has been given to the college of engineering and international students due to the fact that more support has been provided for these two groups that represent a large number of students on campus. The attention that international students have gotten from the faculty has been much better than before, thanks to the creation of advising groups dedicated to international students regardless of the major or classification.
|
What will be your priorities if elected or re-elected into office? |
As a re-elected candidate, my priorities will continue to be supporting engineering students who represent close to 20% of enrolled students, in addition to continuing to help international students make their voices known, helping them with their concerns, ideas or a solution that have. Additionally, as a student I am aware of all the situations that occur on campus, so I want to be there to listen to other students, and let them know that there is an organization in charge of helping them with their problems and needs.
|
What difference in the UTEP student body do you hope to make if elected or re-elected? How is running for this specific position going to help you achieve that? |
As Senator-At-Large I feel that they can generally help all UTEP students as there is no focus on one specific college. The difference I hope to see in the student body is more opportunities for students to network, and more opportunities for faculty, staff, and students to be connected. However, it is important that there is more diversity and culturalism in the student body since UTEP, being a university on the border, has no limits in diversity and culture, it is therefore important that the opinion of international students is more noticeable.

I am here to welcome you all and be your voice in the bills or amendments brought up in the senate.

What difference in the UTEP student body do you hope to make if elected or re-elected? How is running for this specific position going to help you achieve that? |
As a legislative assistant I have experience in some of the ways and means in the Student Government Association. The Student Government Association has had success in reaching out to their constituents and assisting their needs or issues. However, there is always for improvement and work to be completed in reaching out to the student body (UTEP students). I as a Senator At Large plan to use this position to understand issues, problems that the student body faces such as no further guidance for new students on campus, sexual harassment and assault, and discrimination towards minorities and present it to the Student Government Association to implement solutions. As a Senator At Large, we are required to accomplish a special project each semester and I can implement solutions for the students.

Tell us about yourself. Who are you and what do you hope to be? |
I am a senior majoring in rehabilitation science with a concentration in physical therapy for the college of health science. I am from El Paso and have lived here my entire life. My involvements at UTEP are Resident Assistant at Miner Village, Collegiate Senator for Health Science, Appropriations co-chair, community outreach officer for the Student Association for Rehabilitation Science (STARS) and I am the president of the Mineros baseball organization. Some of my hobbies include hiking, reading, working out, and cycling. I envision myself becoming a physical therapist in the sport medical field to help athletes and people who are recovering from injuries. I want to work my way into the sport medicine world and accomplish my goals by making sure athletes can avoid injuries and rehabilitate to normal health. To accomplish these goals taking on leadership roles would help guide me to become the best physical therapist and leader.

Are you a returning member of SGA? |
Yes |
What are the accomplishment(s) you're most proud of from your previous completed term(s)? |
During my year and half in SGA, one of the numerous achievements I am proud of is transitioning from a Legislative assistant to the Health Science Senator during the COVID-19 pandemic. Although, it was virtual, participating in the SGA elections was an accomplishment. Summer 2021 is when SGA’s sustainability committee took on the first project to help with UTEP’s well-being fair. After it was a success, I began working on another project with a few other senators to establish UTEP’s first baseball organization. Then, a member from the judicial branch, another senator, and I created a school supply drive for the Afghanistan refugees. In the appropriations committee, we are an efficient entity to make sure that the study body receives financial assistance. Lastly, one of my last accomplishments will be that the college of health science hosts a gathering for the newly appointed dean of the college.

What will be your priorities if elected or re-elected into office? |
My priorities if re-elected into office is to have students become involved with campus events. For the purpose that students can make memories with their peers as well as, being engaged with campus events. This will give the university organizations and departments the opportunity to spread awareness of sexual assault that happens nationwide. By doing so this will allow the green dot organization to help reduce sexual assault that may occur at UTEP. Providing resources to the students will reduce the possibility of sexual assault on campus. Other priorities include that the college of health science can create a relationship with graduate and undergraduate students by having events for the college. Lastly, it is an essential priority that I reach out to the student body to listen to the feedback being generated. It is imperative that students’ opinions are heard to ensure a better experience for both faculty and staff.

What difference in the UTEP student body do you hope to make if elected or re-elected? How is running for this specific position going to help you achieve that? |
While being in SGA there are things that have come to my attention. One of those instances is that the student body feels unheard since coming back to campus after the pandemic. With the success of SGA listens it is a good reminder to show us senators how powerful the opinions of our constituents greatly affect our experience while attending the university. Which is why SGA should host these events but in areas where students are always walking by or have collegiate senators table in their college. By doing this, it will create an atmosphere where students are able to feel comfortable to voice their opinions and engage with their senators so that they may have a channel for communication. I can represent a portion of the student population and make sure that their voices are heard. To allow the campus to flourish in whichever ideas can better the university.
