Hunt Institute Director Part of Bi-National Energy Forum

Patrick Schaefer, executive director of UTEP’s Hunt Institute for Global Competitiveness, was a panelist at the U.S.-Mexico Energy Forum on Dec. 9, 2016, at The Woodlands Resort and Conference Center in The Woodlands, Texas.
The theme of the forum, which was organized by the U.S.-Mexico Chamber of Commerce, was “Opportunities and Challenges.” Schaefer was part of a panel that discussed regional perspectives.
The chamber’s invitation comes on the heels of the recent release of the Hunt Institute’s landmark Paso del Norte Energy Sector Review, which clarified the structure and regulation of energy resources in West Texas, southern New Mexico and northern Chihuahua, Mexico. The institute is part of UTEP’s College of Business Administration.
Schaefer also was honored recently with one of the inaugural El Paso Breakthrough Leader Awards from the Greater El Paso Chamber of Commerce. The chamber presented the award to Schaefer during its 117th annual Chamber Gala in November in the Judson F. Williams Convention Center.
The award was created to recognize individuals who drive community change. Organizers called recipients visionaries who raise standards as they inspire, engage and empower others. Schaefer was modest about the honor and called it a reflection on the superior work done by the institute’s staff during the past two years.
The 30-something director is a multilingual and multi-degreed attorney with a grounded understanding of comparative economic, political and legal systems of the U.S. and Latin America. Prior to the Hunt Institute, the former Fulbright Scholar held positions with the World Bank Group, the law firm of Uría Menéndez and the Inter-American Development Bank.
The Hunt Institute is a think tank created to develop economic frameworks to analyze the institutional and regulatory structures that influence the quality of life of millions of people in the Paso del Norte region.
