The University of Texas at Austin College of Pharmacy in cooperation with UTEP offers two professional degree programs in pharmacy: a five-year curriculum leading to the Bachelor of Science in Pharmacy and a six-year curriculum leading to the Doctor of Pharmacy (Pharm.D.) degree. Each program offers a course of study in the pharmaceutical and clinical sciences designed to provide to the community, pharmacists who are scientifically trained and clinically competent to deliver a full spectrum of pharmaceutical services in all areas of practice.

The five-year curriculum is designed to prepare men and women to practice pharmacy in a contemporary setting, whether in a community or hospital pharmacy, in a long-term care facility, or in the pharmaceutical industry. This objective is met through a balanced program of study in pharmaceutics, pharmaceutical and natural products chemistry, pharmacology, therapeutics, pharmacy administration, natural and social sciences, and the humanities, as well as a structured clinical and professional practice experience program. In addition, the curriculum is aimed at inculcating an understanding of the basic sciences sufficient to prepare the student for graduate study in the pharmaceutical sciences.

The six-year PharmD program is designed to provide a combined academic and clinical service experience for pharmacists and pharmacy students whose abilities and career aspirations suggest significant potential for innovative leadership in professional practice. Nationally and in Texas, consideration currently is being given to the discontinuation of the bachelor's level training for pharmacists. If the bachelor's degree is phased out, students interested in professional education in pharmacy will enter the Doctor of Pharmacy degree program.

The Cooperative Pharmacy Program, located on the UTEP campus, is designed to facilitate access to the College of Pharmacy at Austin by providing opportunities to fulfill graduation requirements in El Paso. At present, the first two years of "pre-pharmacy" curriculum (e.g., organic chemistry, calculus, physics) is offered at UTEP. Students then apply for admission to UT-Austin and undertake about three years of classes in Austin before returning to El Paso to obtain the experiential component of their pharmacy education. As the UT Cooperative Pharmacy Program at UTEP makes further investments in interactive televised classrooms, faculty, and distance learning programs, the number of hours of course work in El Paso should increase incrementally and should decrease gradually the course work hours in Austin.

Further information about the program can be obtained from the Program Director who is located at 1100 N. Stanton, Room 201; El Paso, TX 79902 (915/747-8519) or from the University of Texas at Austin, College of Pharmacy (512/475-9756).
