The University of Texas at El Paso’s Andrea Shaheen Espinosa, DMA, assistant professor of ethnomusicology, recently accepted an invitation by the Ecole des Hautes Etudes en Sciences Sociales (EHESS) (School for Advanced Studies in Social Sciences) in Paris, France, to participate in an ethnomusicological institute Sept. 2-8, 2018, in Bayonne, France.

Shaheen, an ethnomusicology studies specialist, will serve as a speaker and performer at "La musique des migrants: faire de l’art en situation d’urgence,” or “Migrants’ Music: Making Art in Crisis.” She will make joint and individual presentations at the forum that also will feature representatives from top music institutions from France, England, Germany, and the United States.

The EHESS also extended additional invitations to two UTEP graduate students who have yet to be named. They could come from the departments of music, history, or sociology and anthropology.

“I’m honored to be able to represent UTEP and our borderland in this incredible opportunity for scholarly and musical exchange,” Shaheen said. “I believe it will be an invaluable experience for our graduate students.”

Lorenzo F. Candelaria, Ph.D., associate provost at UTEP, called the invitation an extraordinary recognition of Shaheen as a rising star in her field, and her research in ethnomusicology, which is particularly timely at an international level.

“This is fantastic news,” Candelaria said. “(Shaheen) has placed UTEP in highly esteemed company and she makes us very, very proud.”
