State Bandmaster Honor Goes to UTEP’s Kenneth Capshaw

The Texas Bandmasters Association (TBA) named UTEP’s Kenneth Capshaw as its 2018 Bandmaster of the Year for outstanding commitment to music education. The organization will present him with his award later this summer.
Capshaw is the assistant director of bands at The University of Texas at El Paso and has been a borderland music educator for more than 40 years. He holds the assistant principal trumpet position with the El Paso Symphony Orchestra, is a member of the TBA and the Texas Music Educators Association, and was inducted into the Phi Beta Mu Texas Bandmasters Hall of Fame in 2013.
The native of Silver City, New Mexico, will be recognized during the association’s 71st annual convention/clinic at 7:15 p.m. Thursday, July 26, in the Lila Cockrell Theatre in San Antonio, Texas.
Capshaw said he was “extremely honored” to receive the award and used it as an opportunity to reflect on his work, his colleagues, and the dedicated students who have come into his life during the past 40 years.
“I am very blessed and grateful for this amazing experience,” he said.
Steve Wilson, DMA, chair of UTEP’s Department of Music, said the department is proud of Capshaw’s latest honor and shares the pride the association has in his work.
“Throughout his entire career, Mr. Capshaw has demonstrated himself to be a caring, dedicated teacher who has always been willing to go the extra mile for his students,” Wilson said. “This honor is much-deserved and we congratulate Mr. Capshaw on this significant accomplishment.”
The TBA is made up of retired and active-duty music education professionals who promote or promoted the important role instrumental music plays in our social, cultural and intellectual lives.
