Jessica Morales formed a new outlook while serving a fall internship.

“I was working in the public defender’s office,” said Morales, a Master of Social Work candidate at The University of Texas at El Paso. “So, my plan since getting my bachelor’s was, initially, being a social worker in health care. But after this internship, I’m thinking I like this legal policy implementation kind of thing. So, I probably will go for my Ph.D. and get my license in clinical social work.”

But, the 23-year-old knows there is one thing she needs to do first.

“Of course, I need to finish this semester,” she said.

Morales joins scores of other students who began the Spring 2018 semester at UTEP the week of Jan. 16.

What they found waiting for them when they arrived is a campus that continues to be in a state of evolution with ongoing construction of the Interdisciplinary Research Building and pedestrian thoroughfare improvements. But the mission of facilitating student success remains the same.

Miner Welcome Week

To help students get acclimated to the start of the new semester, the UTEP Student Engagement and Leadership Center hosts a slate of Miner Welcome week activities.

Events include getting free breakfast tacos on “Taco Tuesday” to a free screening of the hit horror film “It” on Friday.

Students can also take in action at the Don Haskins Center this week as the UTEP women’s basketball team hosts Florida Atlantic University in a Conference USA game at 7 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 18. The Miner men will be back home Feb. 1 when they host Western Kentucky University in a league tilt.

That same day, UTEP will host the first installment of its Centennial Lecture Series in 2018 when Sir Fraser Stoddart speaks at the Undergraduate Learning Center. Stoddart was awarded the Nobel Prize for Chemistry in 2016. He will be the first Nobel laureate to speak at UTEP since Sir Harry Kroto visited the campus in November 2014.
