UTEP Announces New HSI Pathways Cohort

The second cohort of UTEP students selected to participate in the Hispanic Serving Institutions (HSI) Pathways to the Professoriate Program were introduced during a late afternoon ceremony Dec. 18, 2017, in the Peter and Margaret de Wetter Center.
Approximately 50 people attended the celebration that included some remarks from University President Diana Natalicio. The HSI fellows were joined by family, friends, and faculty mentors from the College of Liberal Arts (COLA).
The 10 fellows and their majors are Jessica Armendariz, English and American literature; Lidia Carrillo, history and French; Lauren Viramontes, philosophy; Luis Garcia, English and American literature; Priscilla Judson Wallace, history; Gema Lopez, communication; Ashley Prat, English and American literature; Gustavo Rodriguez, history; Janette Rodriguez, English and American literature; and Karina Salcido, art history.
“It is an honor and pleasure to recognize our new fellows,” said Maryse Jayasuriya, Ph.D., COLA associate dean and co-principal investigator of UTEP’s HSI Pathways. “They will most likely be my future colleagues as professors in the humanities.”
The HSI Pathways program started in 2016. Each cohort lasts 18 months and consists of engaged mentorship with a College of Liberal Arts faculty member, preparation for humanities Ph.D. programs, development of academic and professional skills, and other related research support.
Two of the key elements to the program are the spring semester programming that serves as a primer for the more intensive six-week summer session at UTEP May 29-July 6, 2018.
The Mellon Foundation funds the HSI Pathways program, which involves three partner institutions: UTEP, Florida International University, and California State University Northridge. The program is administered by the Penn Center for Minority Serving Institutions.
