Station1 is a nonprofit organization whose mission is to provide students with socially directed research and internship opportunities.

“I’m extremely grateful and very pleased to be named to this Station1 program,” Reyes De la Riva said. “I’ve met a lot of people along the way who have wanted me to be successful, who wanted to see me get this scholarship. I think everyone out there should know that there are always people who want to see you succeed, who want to help.”

Reyes De la Riva was selected from hundreds of applicants. As a Station1 scholarship recipient, he will receive a package worth approximately $15,000, which includes a hands-on research experience through a laboratory in Boston. He also will receive personal and professional development through counseling and workshops.

As a Station1 alumni, Reyes De la Riva will enjoy access to a network of scholars and professionals.

“I’m looking forward to this opportunity,” Reyes De la Riva said. “I want to be able to come back and help other students find opportunities like this.”

Reyes De la Riva is a native of Chihuahua, Mexico, and has lived in the United States since 2013.

He said he has always had a passion for science but solidified his interest in cellular and molecular biology during his first year at UTEP.

Since fall 2017, Reyes De la Riva has worked in the laboratory of Jianjun Sun, Ph.D., assistant professor at the Border Biomedical Research Center. He has been supported in his studies through the National Institutes of Health-funded BUILDING Scholars program and was elected as a senator-at-large in UTEP’s Student Government Association in May 2017.
