The George J. Mitchell Scholarship Program is a nationally competitive award to study or conduct research at the Master's level at eleven institutions in Ireland and Northern Ireland. This includes the seven universities in the Republic of Ireland, two institutes in Dublin, and two universities in Northern Ireland (Queen's University Belfast and Ulster University). The Mitchell Scholarship is highly selective, with only 12 Scholars chosen from across the United States each year.
This award honors Senator George Mitchell of Maine who served as U.S. Special Envoy to Northern Ireland from 1995 - 2001. Under his leadership the Good Friday Agreement, an historic accord ending decades of conflict, was agreed to by the governments of Ireland and the United Kingdom and the political parties of Northern Ireland. The Mitchell Scholarship is designed to introduce and connect generations of future American leaders to the island of Ireland, while recognizing and fostering intellectual achievement, leadership, and a commitment to community service.
Students wishing to compete at the national level for this award must first receive UTEP’s nomination. Interested students must submit their application materials by the UTEP Campus Nomination Deadline and an internal committee will then select the nominees. Please see below for more information.
