April

by Carl Gottlieb

fools you,
with her little
girl lost
in the forest look,
crumbs all snatched
by old crows,
helpless,
not knowing her way
home, while her
mother somewhere
is preparing her
for supper,
and her brother,
born in a feathered nest
has flown the coop,
but, she,
originally christened
June,
nicknamed April
because of unexpected
temper changes:
rain one minute,
sunburst the next,
bugs us so much
we curse and call her
the witch who'll
never settle down
with the good woodsman,
her rescuer.
