Brief Alcohol and Substance Intervention for College Students
Brief Alcohol and Substance Intervention for College Students is a two-session prevention program where UTEP students can examine their drinking (BASICS version) or marijuana use (CASICS version) behaviors in a non-judgmental and confidential environment. Both versions are designed to reduce problematic substance use among students by helping them make healthier decisions. The goal of the program is to promote healthy choices, to motivate modifications of substance use patterns, and improve coping skills. Students may participate in one or both of these as necessary. Both BASICS and CASICS versions follow the same steps described below.
Step 1 Registration

Step 2 First Session
During Session 1, you will learn about alcohol and marijuana statistics, substance use and safety, and health awareness.
Step 3 Responsibilities
After Session 1, we will ask you to schedule Session 2, track your drinking, marijuana use, or motivation toward goals for at least two weeks, and complete the Online Assessment.
Step 4 Second Session
During Session 2, you will speak with us one-on-one and expand your knowledge about your current substance use patterns, how your family history can impact your drinking or marijuana use, and any risks associated with your substance use behavior in the past 3 months. All of this is done in a private environment!
*BASICS is administered by a trained graduate student.
By the time you complete BASICS, you will know more about the impact of drinking and marijuana use, be able to evaluate your use, and become familiar with some safety tools.
