    1.- Linguistics

    Requirements for Admission

    1. Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution in the U.S. or proof of equivalent education in a foreign institution;
    2. undergraduate degree or satisfactory subject preparation in linguistics, a language, or a related field resulting in a satisfactory GPA;
    3. successful completion of a statistics course (for applied linguistics);
    4. competency in both Spanish and English (for Hispanic linguistics or Spanish applied linguistics);
    5. satisfactory score on the Graduate Record Examination (GRE); and
    6. TOEFL score of 550 or higher for international applicants whose first language is not English or who have not completed a university degree in the U.S.

    Degree Requirements (30 hours)

    Core (9 hours)
    LING 3501Principles of Linguistic Analysis
    LING 3509Generative Syntax
    or
    LING 3512Functionalist Syntax
    LING 3520Phonology

    Electives (21 hours)

    Students complete their curriculum with 21 additional graduate hours in linguistics. Up to six graduate hours in Spanish may be used in place of linguistics hours for students for whom such course work would be appropriate.

    Those who choose to focus on either applied linguistics or Hispanic linguistics should include the following courses among these 21 hours.

    Applied Linguistics
    LING 3508Second Language Teaching
    LING 3530Computer-Assisted Language Learning
    LING 3548Second Language Acquisition

    Plus the courses in one of the following two groups:

    English:
    LING 3510Pedagogical Issues in English Structure

    Three additional hours chosen form the following:
    LING 3531Teaching Second Language Composition
    LING 3541Psycholinguistics and Reading
    LING 3574Language Testing
    LING 3588Bilingualism
    LING 3589Problems in Language Instruction

    Spanish:

    Six hours chosen from the following:
    LING/SPAN 3581Spanish Phonetics and Phonology
    LING/SPAN 3582Spanish Syntax
    LING/SPAN 3583Spanish Morphology
    LING/SPAN 3585Spanish Historical Linguistics

    Hispanic Linguistics:
    LING/SPAN 3581Spanish Phonetics and Phonology
    LING/SPAN 3582Spanish Syntax
    LING/SPAN 3583Spanish Morphology
    LING/SPAN 3585Spanish Historical Linguistics

    Additional Requirements (6 hours)

    Students may select either the thesis or non-thesis option. The thesis option requires LING 3598 and 3599. The non-thesis option requires LING 3597 (with and extended research paper to be defended and submitted as required by the Graduate School) and three additional hours of linguistics electives
