Pain Modulation and Rehabilitation Lab
The Pain Modulation and Rehabilitation Lab (PMR Lab) at UTEP is dedicated to advancing scientific understanding of endogenous pain modulation mechanisms and translating these discoveries into evidence-based interventions for improved patient care. Our research investigates how the nervous system naturally modulates pain through conditioned pain modulation (CPM), exercise-induced hypoalgesia, and non-invasive brain stimulation techniques. We employ rigorous quantitative sensory testing methodologies to examine pain sensitivity, temporal dynamics of facilitation and inhibition, and the neurophysiological mechanisms underlying pain relief. Through interdisciplinary collaboration, mentorship of emerging scientists, and community engagement, we strive to transform CPM from merely an assessment tool into a therapeutic intervention that can enhance quality of life for individuals experiencing pain.
