The Ethnography of Languages, Literacies, and Learning (EL3) Lab at the University of Texas at El Paso is both a research facility and a group of researchers and educators working from diverse perspectives on the US-Mexico border. The Paso del Norte region is a hybrid and contested space, historically a barrier and a refuge as well as a crossing point and a passage for diverse communities. We draw on the possibilities and perspectives of this unique location in our work locally, in other border contexts, and throughout the Americas.

El Laboratorio de Etnografía, Lenguas, Literacidades y Aprendizaje (EL3 por sus siglas en inglés) de la Universidad de Texas en El Paso consiste de un espacio para la investigación y un grupo de investigadores y educadores que trabajan desde distintas perspectivas en la frontera México-Estadounidense. La región de El Paso del Norte es un espacio híbrido que se disputa entre un barrera histórica y un refugio, así como un punto de encuentro y un paso para comunidades diversas. Contamos con las posibilidades y perspectivas exclusivas de este lugar para nuestro trabajo local y en otros contextos de frontera, y a lo largo de las Américas.
La inequidad en educación requiere soluciones basadas en la investigación que tomen en cuenta las diversas perspectivas de las comunidades involucradas y la complejidad de las relaciones entre las prácticas educativas, culturales y lingüísticas. Para nosotros las prácticas de enseñanza y aprendizaje que motivan y desarrollan la biliteracidad—o la lectura, escritura y prácticas orales en dos o mas lenguas o sus variaciones—están integradas a un futuro con más oportunidades educativas equitativas y de vida para todas las personas. En general, visualizamos un mundo donde el multilingüismo y las literacidades múltiples son valoradas y sustentadas en contextos de aprendizaje y experiencia de vida.
Educational inequality demands research-based solutions that take into account multiple stakeholders’ perspectives and the complex relationships between educational, cultural, and linguistic practices. We see teaching and learning practices that encourage and develop biliteracy—or reading, writing, and oral practices in two or more languages or varieties—as integral to a future with more equitable educational and life opportunities for all people. Broadly, we envision a world where multilingualism and multiple literacies are valued and supported across contexts of learning and life experience.

In our language use or languaging on this EL3 Lab website, as in much of our research and interaction, we take a translanguaging approach. Translanguaging (García, 2009; García & Li Wei, 2015) is a theory of language as a whole linguistic repertoire rather than separable named languages and it describes the fluid use of people’s bi-/multilingual repertoires to meet communicative needs. We thus use both Spanish and English in simultaneous presence on our website in representation of some of the ways of bilingual languaging in our México-U.S. borderland context. The main element in our logo is the Tlahtolli, the náhuatl spiral that represents speech. Depending on the context, tlahtolli can mean tongue, idiom, or language, both written and spoken. In our design, several spirals com together as an at-sign, an essential element of the digital age, a symbol that situates both users and domains in social media platforms. A depiction of situatedness, this at-sign also represents the ethnographic practice of situating social practices within their contexts. In its entirety, our logo represents the convergence of digital media and the diverse ways of using, thinking about, and researching languages and literacies in their sociocultural contexts.
El elemento principal de nuestro logo es el tlahtolli, la voluta Náhuatl que representa el habla. Dependiendo del contexto, tlahtolli puede significar lengua, idioma, o lenguaje, tanto escrito como hablado. En nuestro diseño, varias volutas se encuentran en una arroba, un componente fundamental de la era digital, un símbolo que sitúa tanto el dominio como los usuarios de distintas plataformas informáticas; como símbolo de situacionalidad, esta arroba representa también el acercamiento etnográfico de situar las prácticas sociales en sus contextos. En su totalidad, nuestro logo representa la convergencia de medios digitales y las diferentes formas de pensar en, utilizar, e investigar los lenguajes y literacidades en sus contextos socioculturales.
