Celebrating Student Success at Yale Undergraduate Research Conference
The Journey to New Haven
In February 2025, Renata Ortega, a dedicated CREATE program student researcher, made the journey from El Paso to New Haven, Connecticut, to represent UTEP at one of the nation's most prestigious undergraduate research conferences. Her participation wasn't just a personal achievement—it was a testament to the transformative power of mentorship and academic support.
Renata's journey to Yale highlights the profound impact of the CREATE program's dedication to student growth and the opportunities it provides for students to compete on a national stage.

The Yale Undergraduate Research Symposium
The Yale Undergraduate Research Symposium (YURS) is a highly selective event that invites top undergraduate researchers from across the nation through a rigorous blind peer-review process. Each year, hundreds of students submit their work, but only the most innovative and impactful research presentations are selected.
Renata presented her innovative engineering education research, showcasing methodologies and findings that contribute to improving how we teach and learn engineering concepts. Her work stood alongside research from students at top-tier institutions across the country.
A National Milestone
Earning Honorable Mention at YURS is a significant achievement that proves what we call the "UTEP Edge" — when given the right opportunities, support, and mentorship, UTEP students not only compete with but excel alongside their peers from Ivy League and other elite institutions.
This recognition reflects not only Renata's dedication and talent but also the quality of research training and mentorship available through the CREATE program. It demonstrates that excellence in undergraduate research knows no institutional boundaries.
The Impact of Mentorship
Behind every successful student researcher is a network of dedicated mentors, advisors, and peers. The CREATE program provides this crucial support system, offering students like Renata the guidance, resources, and encouragement needed to pursue ambitious research goals.
From developing research questions to presenting findings at national conferences, CREATE mentors work closely with students throughout their research journey, helping them build the skills and confidence necessary to succeed in competitive academic environments.
