Humanities 3301: Ancient Cultures
TOPIC: Ancient Mediterranean Culture

This course will trace the evolution of ancient Middle Eastern, Greek and Roman cultural expressions from the inception of written literature to the beginning of Christianity. The course will follow the invention of democracy - what it is supposed to be - early philosophy, but especially changing conceptions of morality. We will particularly study epic poetry, Gilgamesh, the Odyssey, and the Aeneid, with generous selections from the Bible, Greek tragedy, and the Roman Novel. The instructor has published on all these texts.
