For the fourth consecutive year, UTEP has broken its record for research conducted. UTEP reported $130.5 million in expenditures for fiscal year 2022 in response to an annual survey from the National Science Foundation (NSF).

According to the latest figures, UTEP has moved up to No. 4 among public, non-medical higher education institutions in Texas for total federal research expenditures behind UT Austin, Texas A&M and the University of Houston; and third in the state in total research expenditures per tenured and tenure-track faculty after UT Austin and Texas A&M.

“This is a remarkable milestone for UTEP, but the impact of our research is the most important measure of success,” said President Heather Wilson. “Our research achievements in areas like genetics of disease, hypersonics, brain science and water are creating new knowledge and improving life in this community and beyond.”

UTEP’s $130.5 million FY 2022 total represents an increase of 19.3% compared to last fiscal year’s figure of $109.4 million. University leaders credit this surge in year-to-year growth to the implementation of several large new awards and ramped-up research work following the resumption of in-person activities on campus after a record year of research proposal submissions during COVID.

The data is part of the University’s most recent report in response to NSF’s Survey of Research and Development Expenditures at Universities and Colleges.

Annual spending totals take into account research and development expenditures across all sources of funds, including federal, state, industry and foundations.

“This new record is a measure of UTEP’s research productivity that is consistent with our University’s status as one of the premier research institutions in the nation,” said Roberto Osegueda, Ph.D., UTEP vice president for research. “It also further demonstrates that the culture of research we’ve been fostering for years has taken root across all academic disciplines in our campus.”
