UT System Regents Approve Construction of New $108M Student Housing Complex at UTEP

With soaring enrollment, building will ease demand for more housing on campus

EL PASO, Texas (Nov. 20, 2025) – This week, The University of Texas System Board of Regents approved the construction of a new $108 million student housing complex at The University of Texas at El Paso. The approval comes after high demand for more housing on campus; UTEP housing has been at 100% capacity for the last four consecutive years.

“More and more students and families are putting their trust in a UTEP education, and we’re bursting at the seams, as reflected in our recent record enrollment,” said UTEP President Heather Wilson.

The new funds will create a four-story, co-ed dormitory for freshmen with 456 beds in single and double occupancy rooms. Amenities will include a fitness center, lounges and a study room. A large dining hall with a built-in dining plan will also be incorporated.

“We intend for this housing complex to be cost-effective and as affordable as possible for future students,” said Brendan Gallagher, Ph.D., vice president of business affairs. “It will have competitive pricing for our region.”

In the last two years, UTEP housing applications have steadily increased by more than 15%. Retention among returning student residents has also increased. In fall 2024, 50% of students living on campus were returning students. For fall 2025, that number is now nearly 60%.

The new complex will be located on the north side of Kidd Field. Upon opening in 2028, the University will have 1,500 beds on campus.

The $108 million allocation by the UT System will be financed through the Revenue Financing System, funds which ultimately will be repaid by UTEP through housing revenue streams.
