The Political Geography Specialty Group, which is part of the Association of American Geographers, recently announced that it selected The University of Texas at El Paso’s Jeremy Slack, Ph.D., assistant professor of geography, to receive its Richard Morrill Award for Public Outreach.
The award recognizes Slack’s work to combine student research to raise awareness about the situation asylum seekers and deportees face if the U.S. sends them back to their home country. He said academia seldom acknowledges this kind of research.
“Geographical scholarship has much to offer and should not be confined to publication in academic journals,” Slack said.
