The fellowship calls for Serafine, an assistant professor in the Department of Psychology, to promote careers in fields that study mental illnesses and their treatment throughout El Paso with a special focus on high schools. She also is to help promote Biomedical Research Awareness Day (BRAD). This year it was celebrated on April 18, 2019.

At UTEP, Serafine is a behavioral neuroscience specialist who researches complex human diseases such as obesity, type 2 diabetes and substance abuse, and directs the Behavioral Pharmacology Laboratory.

Serafine earned her doctorate in behavior, cognition and neuroscience, and her master’s degree in biological/experimental psychology from American University in Washington, D.C., in 2012 and 2009, respectively, and her bachelor’s degree in psychology from Norwich University in Northfield, Vermont, in 2005.

The ACNP is a professional organization that promotes research and education in neuropsychopharmacology, the scientific study of how the central nervous system reacts to drugs and the resultant effects on the mind and behavior. The AMP is a nonprofit, health-research advocacy group that supports the advancement of human and animal medicine through responsible and highly regulated research.
