Interactive UTEP Production Blends Art, Dance, Sci-Fi

Representatives from The University of Texas at El Paso’s departments of Art and Theatre and Dance will collaborate on two free, interactive performances at 7 and 8 p.m. Thursday, May 27, 2021, at the Undergraduate Learning Center plaza and the Chihuahuan Desert Gardens’ amphitheater.

Angel J. Cabrales, assistant professor of art who specializes in sculpture, said he hopes that “Teoquiyaoatl,” which means “sacred portal,” will instill a curiosity into untaught histories of the region’s Mesoamerican heritage. Each 30-minute presentation will be told through a science-fiction motif.

“The goal is to nurture the dignity in one’s ethnic heritage, creating thought, generating conversation and discussion to forge a strong sense of honor in who we are as a people,” Cabrales said.

Cabrales designed the sculptures and the costumes for the performance. Melissa Melpignano, Ph.D., lecturer and director of the theatre and dance department’s dance program, created the choreography and will be among the dancers, which includes a UTEP dance student and department alumni. UTEP alumnus Henry Van will direct the music.

Patrons will be asked to maintain social distancing.
