A professor from The University of Texas at El Paso has been chosen as the recipient of the Alpha Sigma Mu Fellow honor from an international scholastic society.
Devesh Misra, Ph.D., the Freeport McMoRan Distinguished Chair in Metallurgical Engineering and Professor of the Department of Metallurgical, Materials andBiomedical Engineering in UTEP’s College of Engineering, has been named the recipient of the Alpha Sigma Mu Fellow Award.
The honor will be presented Oct. 15 as part of the Materials Science and Technology 2018 Conference and Exhibition in Columbus, Ohio.
“I am absolutely delighted to be honored by the society,” Misra said.
“Dr. Misra is an extraordinary researcher who as achieved important results in his work on metals, alloys and nanostructured materials over the years,” said Theresa A. Maldonado, Ph.D., dean of the College of Engineering. “I am pleased he is being recognized by the Alpha Sigma Mu Honor Society. I am honored to have Dr. Misra on our faculty.”
Misra obtained his undergraduate degree in metallurgical engineering from the Indian Institute of Technology (Banaras Hindu University) Varanasi in 1980 and his Ph.D. in metallurgy and materials science from the University of Cambridge in 1984. Misra’s
interdisciplinary research interests include advanced high strength-high toughness combination metals and alloys for structural and functional applications, materials for energy systems, biomaterials, and nanostructured materials including composite materials. These research programs involve the use of a broad spectrum of materials characterization techniques such as electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, electron backscatter diffraction (EBSD), and mechanical testing.
Alpha Sigma Mu is the international professional honor society for materials science and engineering. According to the organization’s website, the “Alpha Sigma Mu Fellow award is conferred upon those select few whose technical attainment and contributions to society through leadership in the field of materials science and engineering have resulted in significant benefits to humankind and have distinguished themselves in industry, government, education, and management, and/or service to Alpha Sigma Mu over a long period of time.”
