EL PASO, Texas – The University of Texas at El Paso is launching a new resource for local economic analysis that will help local leaders, business owners and regional stakeholders make more informed decisions.

UTEP’s Hunt Institute for Global Competitiveness released its first monthly Paso Del Norte Economic Indicator Review e-newsletter on July 14, 2020. The newsletter provides detailed analyses of economic trends in the region. This tool is designed to help community leaders and business owners make data-driven decisions to positively shape the economy of our region.

“UTEP aims to positively impact the economy and well-being of the community we serve,” said UTEP President Heather Wilson. “One way we do this is through the Hunt Institute’s new monthly newsletter that provides data and analysis not otherwise available in formats that are accessible. We hope that this newsletter provides helpful insights to aid business owners and leaders.”

Among the findings outlined in the inaugural edition of the newsletter are the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic on employment, maquiladoras activity and truck freight border crossings, as well as which occupations are currently in demand in the tri-state region that includes El Paso, Texas; Las Cruces, N.M.; and Ciudad Juárez, Mexico.

The Hunt Institute, which is housed within UTEP’s College of Business Administration, has existed since 2014, seeded by a $5 million gift from the Hunt Family Foundation. The center has served as a source of information for the region’s economic health, and has supported the continued development of research and graduate programs within the college.

“The Hunt Institute can serve as a valuable resource to the Paso del Norte region and beyond,” said College of Business Administration Dean James Payne, Ph.D. “The inaugural newsletter is the first of many outreach efforts to better serve the community and have a positive impact.”

The Hunt Institute’s unique market analysis tools focus on key economic sectors that span and pass through the strategic convergence of three states and two countries in the Paso del Norte region. Its market analysis focuses on the following sectors: energy, water, banking, labor, manufacturing and international trade with data derived from centralized regional databases, strategic sector analyses, cross-border GIS sector mapping and economic impact modeling.
