The Ph.D. program embraces a variety of advanced disciplines in Earth and Environmental Sciences, with research themes focused in Earth System Geochemistry, Geospatial Research, Professional and Entrepreneurial Geosciences, Science Learning and Education, Solid Earth and Geophysics, and Tectonics and Sedimentation. The program is supported by a variety of geochemical instruments used for advanced isotope and element analysis and includes geophysical research infrastructure, geospatial facilities, and extensive computational and software resources.

As a doctoral candidate, Rachel Phillips’ focus is on studying biogeochemistry and paleoceanography. Rachel has maximized her time at UTEP by complementing her academics with additional experiences. On campus, she has worked as both a teaching assistant and research assistant. Off campus, she is president of the El Paso Geological Society and has her own YouTube channel and website, Geo Girl, where she uploads educational geology, geobiology and geochemistry videos. Through her education and activities, Rachel aims to make her career as a scientist more impactful and inclusive.
Graduates of the Ph.D. in Geological Sciences work in academia, for the government and for private businesses, studying nature preservation, energy extraction and more. With their deep knowledge of earth sciences, they work in a variety of fields promoting green practices and conservation.
