Geophysics is an interdisciplinary field that combines mathematics, geology, computer science, signal processing, engineering and many other sciences to study the Earth, energy and the environment. UTEP's extensive geophysical equipment inventory and computational facilities allow students and faculty to collaborate with universities and government agencies throughout the world.
Work with the CyberShare Center of Excellence to create 3D Earth models.
Use equipment such as broadband earthquake sensors, gravimeters and magnetometers in the field.
Students can present research at major national geology conferences.
Julia Astromovich recently started her career in industry working as a geoscientist for Overton Park Oil and Gas in Fort Worth, Texas. At UTEP, she relished her role as a graduate researcher, specializing in non-seismic methods to characterize salt tectonic regions and structure. She also engaged with elementary school students while performing Earth Day outreach.
The training geophysics students receive in geology, geophysics and computational techniques make them highly adaptable to the changing economy and societal needs. UTEP graduates find employment in resource extraction, environmental and engineering consulting firms, government agencies and academic institutions.
