College of Science
UTEP established the M.S. in Professional Science – the first in Texas – to address a need for job candidates with a scientific understanding of an industry’s inner workings. Students earn two certificates to complete the program. The first, offered by the College of Science, trains students in robust laboratory settings such as the Border Biomedical Research Center. The second certificate is earned from any UTEP college or school.

Haidar Ahmed is an aspiring physician who pursued the professional science program because he wanted a way to make his resume stand out. Ahmed worked in the microbiology lab of UTEP’s Border Biomedical Research Center and co-authored a study on advances for treatment of leishmaniasis, a tropical disease caused by a parasite. As he pursues medical school, Ahmed is grateful UTEP’s program primed him for a focus on microbiology.
The professional science program enhances the marketability of STEM students by matching graduate hours in a specific discipline in science with complementary graduate hours in a discipline that helps the student meet 21st century workforce demands.
