The multidisciplinary Environmental Science program provides a foundation of knowledge and skills for careers in the environmental workforce. Students study biodiversity, climate change, pollution, environmental policy and more. Their research findings are presented at University colloquiums and national conferences. Students see firsthand how their work plays out along an international border in the desert Southwest.
Choose a concentration in biology, chemistry, geosciences, hydroscience or secondary education
Conduct research work in El Paso, Canada, Mexico, the Alps, the Himalayas and Africa
Contribute to solutions for real-world problems through internships
Michelle Quiroz, is an Environmental Science major, with a concentration in hydroscience. She is currently working on a research project that links irrigation, soil salinity, calcite formation and carbon dioxide release in a pecan orchard in Tornillo, Texas. She said the research opportunities she is experiencing at UTEP have prepared her for a career in the hydrology field.
UTEP's environmental science alumni have found careers with the Environmental Protection Agency, Texas Commission on Environmental Quality, Texas Parks and Wildlife, the U.S. Army, and a host of private companies. Graduates are also offered research opportunities with leading scientists and contribute to environmental topics such as biodiversity, climate change and more.
