Celebrate Standout Work in Earth, Environmental and Resources Sciences
Thank you for checking out our latest newsletter!
We have a lot of exciting updates across the college, notably in our Department of Earth, Environmental and Resources Sciences (DEERS), formerly known as Geological Sciences.
This program was renamed about a year ago to better reflect the breadth of knowledge involved in earth sciences, which encompasses geographical information systems, mathematics, hydrology and mineral resources, among other core science disciplines. Students who pursue this field have excellent job prospects, so we look forward to seeing the impact our current and future students will make in our region and beyond.
We will be highlighting this program as part of UTEP's first-ever Raise Your Pick Giving Day. We hope you look at these campaigns and consider supporting our students, faculty and staff, who engage in innovative research and education in our unique binational community.
UTEP received a $7.2 million grant from the National Science Foundation for the Community-Driven Inclusive Excellence and Leadership Opportunities in the Geosciences, or CIELO-G program, which will be led by our DEERS faculty and will change the ways the geosciences are perceived, taught and applied.
Another faculty member, Jose Hurtado, Ph.D., was recently honored by NASA for his years of critical work in their training process, cementing the impressive work our faculty and students accomplish in the field.
Separate from DEERS, we’re so excited to highlight a major accolade for Igor Almeida, Ph.D., in molecular biology. He was elected to the Brazilian Academy of Sciences for his work in parasitology.
We’re also inviting all students to learn more about our environmental sciences master's program, which will train scientists to address local to international environmental problems from a multidisciplinary perspective.
We hope you’ve enjoyed reading these updates and look forward to highlighting even more work from our students, faculty and staff in our next newsletter.
Hasta la próxima and Go Miners!
