Project Title: Synthesis and Characterization of new uranium-based mixed metal endohedral fullerenes
Research description: Since the discovery of the first endohedral metallofullerene in 1991, a great variety of lanthanides, transition metals, alkaline earth metals and alkali metals have been encapsulated in numerous sized carbon cages. Nevertheless, the study of actinide endohedral fullerenes has been poorly explored. Dr. Echegoyen’s group has pioneered the study of new nitride, carbide, sulfide and oxide uranium-based cluster fullerenes. Taking advantage of the expertise and the techniques developed in this group, our next goal is to synthesize uranium-based mixed metal endohedral fullerenes, characterize them and study their electronic properties.
