WORKSHOP AND AUDITION INFORMATION FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

What should I bring to the audition?

See Required Items to Bring to Auditions, extra dance attire, shoes (just in case), a water bottle, snacks, and any personal items.

How do I prepare for auditions?

The UTEP Dance take pride in having well-rounded and technically trained dancers. There are many dance studios where you may take classes to improve on your technique and skills. How you present yourself is a reflection of your commitment & potential.

How should I wear my make-up?

Apply your makeup like you would for game day or a recital, which includes false lashes and red lips.

How does it work?

All food is free for eligible students/employees. Visitors may choose what they would like to take and quantities handed out depend on current availability. Food drives are conducted every semester and donations are always welcomed to ensure the pantry is as fully stocked as possible.

There are two options for taking food from the pantry. Visitors may take a day's worth of items (five single serving items) and visit up to twice a week OR they may take an estimated week's worth, and visit up to twice a month. Quantities handed out will depend on availability and will fluctuate, pantry staff will hand out items according to availability to keep the pantry sustainable.

How should I wear my hair?

Hair should be out of your face and curled.

If I mess up, can I do the routine again?

It is completely at the discretion of the judges if a candidate will be given more than one opportunity to perform the routine. A candidate may be given a second opportunity if he/she does not execute enough of the routine to be given a score.

Who judges the audition?

The judges are all dance professionals who will not be given any information about the individual dancer prior to or during the audition. Their selection will be based completely on their critique of the candidate’s performances. If a judge personally knows the candidate, another judge will be available to score the applicant.

Can my family and friends watch the audition?

No, guests may wait until the auditions are over to see the candidate.

Do I have to pay for my own uniform?

Basic uniforms are provided (halftime costumes, poms, warm-ups, rain gear, etc.).

Are there any fees?

Each team member may have dues dues of $275-350.

What can I expect at rehearsals?

At this time, rehearsals are on Monday, Wednesday and Friday 7:00am-9:20am. Additional rehearsals will be added towards the end of the fall semester as well as weekends in the Spring leading up to our annual show.

Is there a height and weight requirement?

We require all potential members to maintain the appropriate physique in order to look their best in any uniform and costume, as well as properly execute all required skills and choreography. Everyone comes in different shapes and sizes, but all candidates must be in great physical shape.

How will auditions work?

Tryouts are a multi-step process beginning with Preliminaries, Callbacks, a Personal Interview if necessary, and Finals. The pool of candidates may be reduced at any time throughout the tryout process.

Am I allowed to have a job?

Yes, but UTEP Dance Team must take priority.

Do you allow male candidates?

Yes. Auditions are open to both male and female candidates. PRE-AUDITION TO-DO LIST To be eligible for the team, candidates must be accepted to UTEP prior to your tryout date.
