What are Sanctions?
Sanctions are consequences assigned to students when they have been found responsible for violating a campus policy. Sanctions are designed to be educational and consequential, not punitive. The goal at the OSCCR is to hold students accountable for their actions, educate students, and support students as they continue their education at the university.
There are a number of sanctions that the OSCCR can assign a student. These sanctions vary depending on the level of the case. A full list of sanctions options can be found at utep.edu/hoop in section 2, chapter 1. Below is a list of some of the possible sanctions and a brief description:
- Virtual Academic Integrity Laboratory- VAIL is an online course that helps students learn and understand the importance of academic integrity. This course goes over how important it is to be honest and virtuous in an academic setting. Once this course is completed the student takes a quiz which goes over what they learned about academic integrity. The student must have a score of a 90 or above to be able to pass the course. Once this is completed the student will receive a certification showing they completed the course.
- In the event that a student does not pass the quiz, we ask that the student submit the score they received.
- BASICS- is a program at UTEP that assists students with reviewing and reflecting on their drug and/or alcohol use. BASICS helps students understand how these two things can impact not only their health but their future career and goals. Turning in a Sanction
Once a sanction is completed the student needs to turn in their certificate(s) of completion to the Office of Student Conduct and Conflict Resolution. The student can either take a screenshot of their certificate and send it to our email at email@example.com or print out their certification and take in person to our office which is located in Union East room 303.
*the certificate for BASICS is given at the end of program and can either be turned in person or the BASICS Facilitator can turn in it via email.
We understand that life as a student can be complicated and a bit hectic and that we misplace things. The good news is you don’t need to panic. You can either review the outcome letter that was sent to your miners’ email or contact us at 915-747-8694 or email us at firstname.lastname@example.org and a student assistant will be more than happy to send you the information.
When our office assigns’ you a sanction(s) we will give you a good amount of time to complete it and we also give you a due date. If the sanction(s) is not completed by the due date there will be additional consequences. You will receive a reminder email with information about the overdue sanction(s), there will also be a hold placed on your student account. This hold will prevent you from registering for future classes. Once you have completed your sanction(s) we will update your file and remove your hold.
** Holds take up to 24 hours to clear in the system
