CIBS in the Community
El Paso’s location on the United States/Mexico serves up an international community of more than two million inhabitants covering an area larger than the state of Rhode Island. There are two countries (United States and Mexico), three states (Chihuahua, New Mexico and Texas) and nine counties (Ascencion CH, Doña Ana NM, El Paso TX, Guadalupe del Norte CH, Hudspeth TX, Juárez CH, Luna NM, Praxedis CH and Otero NM) represented in what is known as the Paso del Norte Region. It is this very community that CIBS serves, that guides and fuels the Center’s outreach goals.
CIBS strives to maintain tight knit relationships with the community at large in order to fulfill its mission and vision. This is accomplished by providing service to the community through inviting world class lecturers to the Center for the benefit of the UTEP and Paso del Norte Community. The Center has currently invited guest lecturers from every corner of the Inter-American Region with topics ranging from Narcotraffic to Mexican Urban Planning
Future goals for CIBS include the creation of a K-12 component to help encourage Latin American curriculum in the region’s public schools. Increased partnerships with New Mexico State University (NMSU), the Colegio de la Frontera del Norte (COLEF), Universidad Autonoma de Ciudad Juárez (UACJ) and the Universidad Autonoma de Chihuahua (UACH) allow for a broader reach for our border region. Additionally, CIBS maintains close ties with the United States Military through Fort Bliss, United States Consulate in Ciudad Juárez and the Mexico Consulate in El Paso to maintain a presence in the international cultural, political and sociological affairs of the region.
