Out of 5,000 universities nationwide, only 83 institutions offer Risk Management, Insurance, or Actuarial pathways. We launched our Risk Management-actuarial pathway program in the Fall of 2017 with the support of Prudential Financial. There are currently 15,000 actuaries nationwide, of which only 2% are Latinx. As a Hispanic Serving Institution, our mission is to increase the overall number of actuaries and drive diversity and inclusion in the field nationally.

What is Risk Management?

Risk Management is a field of study for uncertain future outcomes. In the investment area, this activity involves the measurement of the risk and the return associated with investments and the decision making for the investment of savings.

Actuarial Science and the role of actuaries is essential to effective risk management. The Actuarial Sciences combine mathematical and statistical methods with the theory, modeling, and instruments of finance to assess and manage risk.

An actuary plays a key role in insurance, banking, reporting agencies and accounting firms. Some of their responsibilities include compiling statistical data for further analysis, estimating the economic costs and probability of incidents such as deaths, accidents, natural disasters, or sickness. They also test, administer, and design pension plans, investments, insurance policies, and various business strategies to maximize profitability and minimize risk.

Why Risk Management?

The average actuary earns around $100,000 a year. Employment in this area is expected to grow by twenty percent over the next ten years. Professionals in this field are engineers of financial wellness and are key players in determining the risk of various financial decisions and outcomes.

At the Woody L. Hunt College of Business we offer a curriculum that integrates four classes specifically designed to pass national actuarial exams. These exams include Financial Mathematics (FM) and Probability (P). Once students have passed both exams, their business core coursework will allow them to apply for a Validation of Educational Experience for Economics, Accounting, and Finance.
