Dr. Khodeza Begum Mitchell Named GRADS-4C Faculty Fellow
The NIH-funded fellowship supports her work on AI-assisted, cloud-based integration of behavioral, clinical, biomarker and genomic data to study type 2 diabetes risk.
Dr. Khodeza Begum Mitchell, an assistant research professor at the Institute for Applied AI Innovation (AAII) at The University of Texas at El Paso (UTEP), has been selected as a Faculty Fellow in Cohort 3 of the GRADS-4C Fellowship Program. The fellowship runs for 1 year, beginning Nov. 1, 2026.
GRADS-4C, the Genomic Research and Data Science Center for Computation and Cloud Computing, is a training hub based at North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University and funded by the National Human Genome Research Institute of the National Institutes of Health (NIH). It trains researchers to work with genomic data on NIH cloud-based platforms.
The Project
Dr. Mitchell’s fellowship project, “AI-Assisted Cloud-Based Multimodal Data Integration for Type 2 Diabetes Risk,” integrates behavioral, clinical, biomarker and genomic data using AI-assisted computational methods. Luisa Gracia Mazuca joins the project as the fellowship’s student researcher.
The project builds on Dr. Mitchell’s work in computational genomics and biomedical data integration at AAII, which includes GPCR-PEnDB, a database that supports the classification of G protein-coupled receptors, and studies of behavioral, physiological and inflammatory data in a university population along the U.S.-Mexico border.
The Fellowship Year
Over the year, Dr. Mitchell will receive training in computational genomics, cloud-based analysis and AI-assisted research methods. The program also includes developing an NIH grant proposal, research collaborations, manuscript preparation and integrating the research into teaching.
