Department: Computer Science

Anantaa Kotal is an Assistant Professor of Computer Science at UTEP, where she leads the PRISM Lab (Private, Responsible, and Interpretable Systems in Machine Learning). Her research centers on building trustworthy and accountable AI systems that operate safely in human-centered and expertise-driven domains. Dr. Kotal advances the foundations of Trustworthy and Generative AI, developing frameworks that align algorithmic innovation with ethical responsibility. Her work addresses privacy in data use, fairness in model inference, and explainability in decision processes, aiming to make AI systems both useful and justifiable—capable of integrating scientific and domain knowledge with data-driven learning. She also explores policy-aligned AI, designing computational models that embed legal and governance constraints directly into their architecture. Her interdisciplinary research spans computing, healthcare, cybersecurity, and the natural and physical sciences, uniting machine learning with scientific discovery, data ethics, and institutional trust to enable AI systems that are as responsible as they are intelligent. Dr. Kotal’s research appears in venues such as IEEE Big Data, ACM CIKM, AMIA, and IEEE Internet Computing, supported by the USDOT and the UT System Trauma Research Collaborative.
