Technical Lead

Department: Institute for Applied AI Innovation

Frank Osuna is the Technical Lead for the Translational AI Lab at the Institute for Applied AI Innovation at The University of Texas at El Paso. He has more than a decade of experience in software engineering, machine learning, and project management. His work combines high-performance computing, artificial intelligence, and scientific visualization to address complex research problems, and he designs and builds resilient software systems that turn that research into practical tools.

Before his current role, Frank served as Director of the Visualization and Interactive Collaboration (VizInC) Research Lab. There he led the lab's design and budget and directed projects that included visualizing a 120-million-atom model of the Cafeteria Roenbergensis virus (CroV). He also led development of the ENGAGE platform, which more than 70 institutions have adopted to manage student success. At UTEP, he has also developed machine learning tools to automate faculty processes, built custom software frameworks, and designed scalable cloud and server infrastructure for research and academic use.

Frank holds a Master of Science in Computer Science from The University of Texas at El Paso. As a graduate research assistant working with NASA Ames Research Center, he contributed to NASA's Cassini-Huygens mission to Saturn. He developed software tools that helped mission scientists analyze and correct spacecraft data, which improved the accuracy of the observations the mission returned.

His interests include software engineering, generative AI, and visualization. He focuses on interdisciplinary work where advanced computing helps move research from data to insight.

Keywords of Expertise: Software Engineering, Generative AI, Visualization.
