Continuous Opportunities
Undergraduate Research
MESL is actively recruiting undergraduate students to in the lab. Students are encouraged to register for RSRC 4033, a "0" cost, "0" credit course, which will appear on their transcript. You may also register for a Special Problems course, in which case you will receive credit and a grade. Students may register for special problems under Dr. Watts or contact other professors involved with MESL.
This experience will include training/orientation and focus primarily on learning and developing new skills. We will conduct weekly laboratory meetings with didactic sessions. We will also proceed to hands-on application of the concepts learned.
Our goal is to provide you with the opportunity to acquire the following skill set:
- Proper procedures for sampling and surveillance of mosquito populations, to include consistent use of laboratory procedures and maintenance of scientific data.
- Proficiency in the identification of mosquito specimens.
- Preparation of mosquito specimens for viral testing.
- Understanding of the importance of medical entomology, especially with regard to the current state of emerging infectious diseases, both locally and globally.
- Ability to conduct a literature review of scientific papers for presentation and discussion.
