Cultural Sensitivity: LGBTQ Overview Training at the DWI Court
The Department of Social Work partners with the El Paso County Criminal Court #2 DWI Treatment Program to provide Master of Social Work students internship placements. On December 19, 2019 BSW faculty member, Erica Balderrama, was invited to present to the DWI Intervention and Treatment Program on LGBTQ+ issues. Judge Roberto S. Anchondo expressed an interest in educating his team on LGBTQ+ issues. Their mission is to enhance public safety through a reduction in the recidivism of alcohol and drug offenders. The program is the first dedicated specialized court in the region to address adults convicted of a DWI offence(s); instills offender accountability by requiring judicial monitoring, mandatory treatment, and intensive supervision; and it can be completed in 15 months and is divided into 5 distinct phases - http://epcounty.com/courts/drugcourt.htm
Judge Anchondo recognizes the need to be informed on all populations and is always to bring in educators to keep his team well informed.
