Social Work Advocacy Day, March 6, 2020
Every other year, the National Association of Social Workers Texas, NASW-TX hosts nearly 1,000 social workers and social work students at the Texas capital building for a day of advocacy. The goal of the event is to further social workers' knowledge about legislative advocacy and provide an opportunity for social workers to speak with their legislators about the social work profession and important client issues.
This year the UTEP Social Work students participated in Social Work Advocacy Day and rally at the State Capital. UTEP student spoke at the Texas Capital steps – Alina Arredondo on ADA issues; Ismael Lopez on need for Veteran services; Anna Gonzalez on trauma informed care and the August 3 Walmart shooting in El Paso. In addition UTEP students, Ana Nuñez and Denise Rascon Terrazas served as SWAD Student Volunteers and UTEP faculty, Alma R. Armendariz and Marina C. Gallardo served as SWAD Faculty Volunteers.
