Program Requirements
Graduate Student Requirements
Need-based student
US citizenship or permanent US residency
3.20 minimum cumulative GPA
Enrolled during the fall and spring semester
Submit a FAFSA for the 2014-2015 academic year
Have an area of study within the College of Science
Select a faculty mentor and an undergraduate student who would be willing to participate in SMARTS workshops, meetings, and activities
Must have at least one full year before graduation if applying to mentor a senior undergraduate and 2 years before graduation if applying to mentor a junior undergraduate

Rising Junior or Rising Senior Level

Be recommended by a graduate student who is interested in becoming your mentor
Seniors must enroll for 3 credit hours in a capstone course (undergraduate research or independent studies)
*NOTE 1.0: Before you apply, contact your UTEP Financial Aid Officer in order to determine if you are considered a "need-based" student.
*NOTE 1.1: Graduate students must apply first to indicate on their application the undergraduate student they are interested in mentoring.
*NOTE 1.2: This does not guarantee the recommended student's acceptance into the program, only the opportunity to apply. Since financial need is an important criterion for acceptance, only those students, both graduate and undergraduate, who have been determined to exhibit financial need based on federal guidelines will be considered for this program, see Financial Aid Policy.
*NOTE 1.3: Junior and Senior students can also seek a graduate student to team up with if they are interested in applying to the program.
