Undergraduate Advising
STUDENT’S RESPONSIBILITY
Students are ultimately responsible for meeting the requirements of their chosen catalog. Please review the catalog carefully. Seek information on opportunities and become involved in student organizations!
EXPECTATIONS OF STUDENTS
- Accept responsibility for own decisions/actions.
- Become knowledgeable of CS curriculum, academic regulations, policies, graduation requirements, and advising guidelines for CS students.
- Become familiar with relevant advising tools: degree plan, degree flowchart and Goldmine degree evaluation report to track current progress towards completion of degree.
- Inform advisor of any issues/concerns in the degree evaluation report such as courses identified as non-contributing courses or any missing credits for already completed courses.
- Identify courses to take in the upcoming semester prior to meeting with advisor. Be ready to discuss your academic goals and objectives with your advisor.
- Complete the Last Year Plan of Study if planning to enroll for CS 4310 as required in the last year of the CS degree.
- Discuss academic performance with advisor including any challenges (hardware/software, Wi-Fi support, family, transportations) or struggles affecting academic progress and be open for suggestions.
- Inform the CS department/Advisor of the need to cancel/reschedule appointment with advisor 24 hours prior to the meeting.
- Check student miners e-mail account regularly for any communications regarding your degree and advising appointment.
ADVISING STEPS AND TIPS
Initial steps:
- Read the catalog; there are many versions. Your catalog is the one in effect when you first started at UTEP. You may switch to a later catalog, but you may not switch to an earlier one. You must complete all the requirements in the catalog of the chosen year.
- Review the Computer Science Degree Plan under your catalog year. For Computer Science degree plan information, please access here.
- Complete a Plan of Study to plan when you will be taking particular courses. Be sure that you consider the pre-requisites.
Steps to take prior to advising:
- Log in to Goldmine and click on Degree Evaluation to view your progress toward your degree.
- Complete the Undergraduate Academic Advising Form prior to seeing your advisor. If you are planning to register for CS 4310, you are required to complete a Final Year Plan of Study to review with your advisor. ( Spring Graduation | Fall Graduation)
- Schedule an appointment with your academic advisor to review your course selections in your Undergraduate Academic Advising Form. Communicate your goals, needs, and concerns with your advisor and inform the advisor of changes in plans and/or circumstances that might impact academic performance.
CAUTIONARY ITEMS
- Students may repeat courses at most three times.
- No more than six (6) W’s will be allowed in a student's degree plan. This rule comes from the Higher Education Coordinating Board.
- The first time that a freshman or sophomore course is repeated for earning a "D" or "F", the former grade is automatically excluded from the GPA calculation.
