BS in Computer Science - BSCS

UTEP’s BS in Computer Science Program provides a strong base in problem-solving skills, programming skills, knowledge of computer architecture, computer science theory, and practical experience in applying the computer to the solution of problems. Numerous upper-division technical electives help students specialize. Our faculty are committed to excellence in teaching by providing innovative, student-focused education.

The BS In Computer Science (BSCS) Program Educational Objectives (PEOs) address the university’s mission to serve the region, nation, and the world by graduating highly competent students with the potential to become leaders in their profession within five years of graduating.

Program Educational Objectives

The Program Educational Objectives of the BS in Computer Science program are centered on preparing graduates who will:

be creative, ethical, proactive, and effective problem solvers across industry, academia, and government, equipped with the foundational, technical, and empirical computer science expertise needed to address real-world challenges (PEO1 - Quality of Our Graduates),

enhance the vitality of the Paso del Norte Region, nation, and beyond, by leveraging their technical expertise, professional skills such as teamwork, leadership, innovation, and professional and community service (PEO2 - Local and Global Impact),

engage in continuous professional development through research, advanced studies, certification, entrepreneurship, or other means (PEO3 - Continuous Improvement).

Student Outcomes

The Student Outcomes of the BS in Computer Science program are: Upon graduation, students will have the ability to:

SO 1.

Apply knowledge of computing and mathematics.

SO 2.

Analyze a complex computing problem and to apply principles of computing and other relevant disciplines to identify solutions. (ABET-1)

SO 3.

Design, implement, and evaluate a computing-based solution to meet a given set of computing requirements in the context of the program’s discipline. (ABET-2)

SO 4.

Function effectively as a member or leader of a team engaged in activities appropriate to the program’s discipline. (ABET-5)

SO 5.

Recognize professional responsibilities and make informed judgments in computing practice based on legal and ethical principles. (ABET-4)

SO 6.

Communicate effectively in a variety of professional contexts. (ABET-3)
