As a young ESL student Rocio Bishop hated math until she met a math professor who inspired her to change her degree path. Her journey in math instruction started as a math tutor at El Paso Community College while she was still studying for her bachelor’s degree. Once she obtained her bachelor’s degree in interdisciplinary studies, she started teaching at EPCC as an adjunct math faculty in 2008. In Fall of 2011, Rocio started teaching at UTEP. She later obtained a Master of Education in Curriculum and Instruction Mathematics. As a Developmental Math Instructor, Rocio has contributed with the department on the development of the co-req math courses and the pedagogy for them. During these years working at UTEP, Rocio has been the tutor and ALEKS coordinator for the department. Rocio’s teaching philosophy is that Developmental Mathematics is the foundation for students to succeed in college math. She believes that by setting a solid foundation in math, students will not fail. She helps all her students learn in meaningful ways so they can be critical thinkers and be successful in college. Rocio loves spending time with her family watching movies.
