2023 Warren Fellowship for Future Educators
Denise Lord, a student in the UTEP educator preparation program, was awarded the 2023 Warren Fellowship for Future Educators by the Holocaust Museum Houston this summer.
Reflecting on her experience, Denise shares, “The Warren Fellowship was a five-day learning experience. We were immersed in a number of lectures from researchers, authors, educators, and other Genocide and Holocaust scholars from across the globe. We had multiple opportunities to walk the museum for further context for the lectures, as well as having the honor to meet Holocaust survivors Bill Orlin and Dr. Anna Steinberger.” She said that some activities incorporated art and Holocaust artifacts to design lesson plans according to different grade levels.
“I felt incredible sadness, anger, and horror throughout the week, but I also had clear moments of hope, especially when learning about the many resources and tools that can be implemented in a classroom that teach our children to be kind to others, to take a stand against injustices, intolerance, and hate” Denise added.
Currently a student teacher in a 3rd-grade classroom, Denise feels that her experience this summer gave her “the confidence to teach the history of the holocaust in a meaningful, respectful, and precise way.”
