About
The overall goal of this Partnership for Research and Education Consortium in Ceramics and Polymers (PRE-CCAP) is to establish a sustainable pipeline of highly trained next generation workforce and community of technical peers for DOE/NNSA’s core mission. The PRE-CCAP will focus on providing opportunities for minority student research internships, research skills training, intellectual collaboration between Minority Serving Institutions (MSI) and DOE laboratories, and to increase visibility of NNSA related scientific activities. The project objectives are to: 1) Build a sustainable pipeline in STEM discipline, 2) Provide intellectual collaboration between MSIs and NNSA labs, and 3) Increase visibility for long term recruitment pipeline development. The proposed activities will include: K12 outreach, new courses, seminar/workshops, student internship, student research training, joint MSI-NNSA labs projects, annual meetings, student co-advising, NNSA lab presence at MSIs’ career fair, and website and social media exposure.

Pipeline Development: Build a sustainable pipeline between DOE’s sites/labs and MSIs in STEM disciplines, and bring a heightened awareness of NNSA plants and laboratories to MSIs with a common interest in STEM research fields. In order to achieve this objective, we propose to carry out the following activities closely related to DOE/NNSA mission and workface development:
- K12 outreach activities to foster a sustainable pipeline of STEM population
- New undergraduate and graduate special topic courses and course modules
- A series of summer workshops and seminars to train high school teacher and students
- Summer student internship program among partner institutions
- Research experience for students
Intellectual Collaboration: Provide opportunities for intellectual challenge and collaboration by promoting scientific interactions between the academic community and scientists at the DOE/NNSA Labs/Plants. We propose to carry out the following activities:
- Joint research project between MSIs and DOE/NNSA Labs/Plants
- Joint patent, journal and conference publications
- Summer student internship at LANL, KCNSC, and other DOE NLs
- Annual technical review meetings, DOE Labs/Plants tours
- Co-advising of graduate students with DOE/NNSA Labs/Plants scientist
Increasing Visibility: Develop and maintain a long-term recruiting pipeline to the DOE/NNSA laboratories by increasing the visibility of the DOE/NNSA scientific activities to U.S. academic communities, specifically Minority Serving Institutions. In order to achieve this objective, we propose to carry out the following activities:
- Permanent course and course module related to in undergraduate curriculum
- Annual Career Fair participant to KCNSC and other DOE/NNSA labs
- Permanent website and social media page for MSIPP at MSIs
