About Sigma Tau Delta
Founded in 1924 by Judson Q. Owen at Dakota Wesleyan University, the Sigma Tau Delta International English Honor Society serves to:
- Confer distinction for high achievement in English language and literature in undergraduate, graduate, and professional studies;
- Provide, through its local chapters, cultural stimulation on college campuses and promote interest in literature and the English language in surrounding communities;
- Foster all aspects of the discipline of English, including literature, language, and writing;
- Promote exemplary character and good fellowship among its members;
- Exhibit high standards of academic excellence; and
- Serve society by fostering literacy.
Currently, there are over 880 chapters of Sigma Tau Delta active at colleges and universities in the United States and abroad.
Sigma Tau Delta hosts a yearly convention in which members are eligible to participate, awards over $30,000 in scholarships to members every year, and publishes its own academic and creative writing journals, to which all members are eligible to submit their academic or creative writing works.
